Monaco- No relenting in pursuit of leaders?

Only Kylian Mbappe, with 25, has found the back of the net in Ligue 1 more frequently this season than Wissam Ben Yeddar, 18. Alongside former Bayer Leverkusen frontman Kevin Volland, Yeddar has struck up a deadly partnership in the final third, with the pair contributing 33 of the 71 goals (46%) Monaco have scored so far. It was the former, though, who stepped up big time last time out in Angers.

With timing ebbing away, Ben Yeddar popped up with his 18th league goal of 2020-21 to secure what could be three potentially huge points in the race to be crowned France’s Ligue 1 champions. That win made it five on the spin for Niko Kovac’s side, who last dropped points on 14th March in a goalless draw with leaders Lille, whom Monaco (W22 D5 L7) still trail by two points as we approach the final four rounds.

Each of those five victories were achieved without conceding, plundering 15 of their own, though, for an average of three per game. At the Stade Louis II, the Principality side are scoring at a rate of 2.29 per game, and have notched at least twice in all but three of seventeen home Ligue 1 games (W11 D5 L1). In fact, Lille are the only one of the past nine visitors to prevent Kovac’s men from netting more than once.

Lyon – Lille defeat the knockout blow?

Barring something extraordinary, Lyon (W19 D10 L5) will not be lifting the Ligue 1 trophy aloft at the end of this season. Last Sunday’s 3-2 loss at home to leaders Lille, in what was an enthralling spectacle at the Groupama Stadium, has seemingly squashed any remaining hopes of reeling in Les Douges and PSG, leaving them trailing that pair by six and five points respectively with only four sets of fixtures remaining.

Stranger things have happened, of course, but the main goal now simply has to be to reel in Monaco and that lucrative third spot. Only positions one to three in France qualify for the Champions League, while only the top-two do so automatically. Therefore Lyon have their work cut out in the remainder of the campaign, trailing Niko Kovac’s relentless side by four points ahead of their clash on Sunday.

Lyon dished out a 4-1 thrashing when these sides met earlier in the season, making it three wins in four Ligue 1 meetings. Les Gones also emerged 3-0 victors on their last visit to this venue, having lost the previous two. Recent form has been patchy to say the least, though, with two wins in six (D2 L2). However, the last time they were beaten on their travels in Ligue 1 was September 2020 (W9 D6 since).

Monaco Vs Lyon Betting Advice

Winning is paramount for both these teams. Monaco, boasting five consecutive league wins – all achieved without conceding a single goal – coming into Sunday, will still be bullish about their chances of catching PSG and Lille in these remaining four rounds to claim a first Ligue 1 title for five years. Meanwhile this fixture represents Lyon‘s best opportunity of cutting into the four-point gap to Monaco in third.

Monaco Vs Lyon – Key Facts:

  • Lyon made it three wins in their last four Ligue 1 meetings with Monaco when winning 4-1 at their Groupama Stadium back in October.
  • However Monaco, who have won their previous five league matches by an aggregate of 15-0, won two of the last three encounters (L1) between the sides as hosts.
  • Lyon are unbeaten away from home in Ligue 1 for 15 matches (W9 D6), scoring at least once in each of the past sixteen away league games.

The sheer fact neither side can afford to settle for a point should ensure we have another full-blooded encounter, hopefully not too dissimilar to last week’s five-goal thriller between Lyon and Lille. Rudi Garcia’s guests have scored in all of their last 16 away Ligue 1 matches, last losing on the road in September (W9 D6). No team in France has more points or scored more often at home this season than Monaco, meanwhile.
