Monaco Preview – Kovac’s troops to start with three points?
Back in July 2020, Niko Kovac was appointed new manager of Monaco. After several disappointing Ligue 1 campaigns, Les Monegasques were back to somewhere near their best last term.
In his first season in charge at the Stade Louis II, Kovac guided Monaco to third place. They stayed in the title race until the very end, eventually finishing five points behind surprise champions Lille. Monaco picked up an impressive 24 wins along the way, drawing six times and losing eight to take 78 points from 38 Ligue 1 games.
Kovac’s boys take on Sparta Prague in the third round of UEFA Champions League qualifying, with the legs taking place either side of Friday’s Ligue 1 opener. In the next week, Monaco will be looking to start the league with three points and book their spot in the Champions League play-off round.
Nantes Preview – Can the visitors cause an upset on opening night?
Nantes were involved in an extremely turbulent season last time around. Christian Gourcuff started the campaign in charge, with Raymond Domenech taking over in December. Domenech’s reign at the Stade de la Beaujoire lasted until February, with Antoine Kombouare stepping in.
Nantes finished 18th and had to face the dreaded promotion / relegation play-offs in France. They played Toulouse over two legs, winning 2-1 away and losing 1-0 at home. Nantes won on away goals and both clubs stayed in their respective leagues.
