Montreal – Desperate to avoid third defeat inside a week?

A week they would rather forget could be about to get a whole lot worse. CF Montreal remain well-placed in the Eastern Conference to make the end-of-season play-offs. Wilfriend Nancy’s men are perched way up in fifth, on 23 points after 15 games – three points above the seventh and final play-off berth. But their current form, collecting three points from the last four league games (W1 L3), is cause for concern.

Thursday’s crushing 4-0 loss in Toronto, coming up well short in the semi-finals of the Canadian Championships, was possibly the culmination of several disappointing results taking their toll on a side that has overachieved so far this season. Rediscovering their confidence in the final third, after successive blanks, looks key to any turnaround in their fortunes. Only LAFC have plundered more goals this season.

Key Stat: No team in this season’s MLS has seen a higher proportion of their matches feature three or more goals than CF Montreal (11 of 15 matches, or 73%). A bet on Over 2.5 Goals would have returned a winner in six of their seven MLS home games in 2022.

Charlotte – Will that elusive away win materialise at ninth attempt?

The search for a maiden MLS away victory resumes as Charlotte – W0 D2 L6 on the road in MLS 2022 – visit Montreal hell-bent on avenging one of only two home defeats inflicted upon them this season, when the Canadians struck once in each half in a 2-0 success on 14 May. While few will be backing Sunday’s visitors to Saputo Stadium with a huge amount of confidence, some encouraging recent form has to be noted.

Under interim manager Christian Latanzio, Charlotte are W3 D1 L2 across their past six league games. They very nearly took all three points from a recent visit to Seattle – a side rising up the Eastern standings after four wins in six – only to succumb to a couple of late strikes in a 2-1 defeat. They would go unbeaten since, though, a 2-0 victory at home to NYRB preceding last week’s 1-1 stalemate away to the Columbus Crew.

Key Stat: Streaky really doesn’t do this team justice. None of Charlotte’s 11 previous MLS matches saw them record the same result consecutively: LDLWLWLWD.

CF Montreal Vs Charlotte Betting Advice

Despite playing one game less, CF Montreal reside higher up the Eastern Conference standings. The Canadians are in fifth spot after picking up 23 points from 15 games, though only three of that total has come from their past four encounters (W1 L3). It is that form which marks them out as being vulnerable favourites this weekend, up against opponents in Charlotte who are only three points back in seventh place.

CF Montreal Vs Charlotte – Key Facts:

  • Having met for the first time in May of this year, CF Montreal have the opportunity to do the double over their opponents after their 2-0 victory in Charlotte little more than a month ago.
  • All of CF Montreal’s first six home league games to start this season featured Over 2.5 Goals and Both Teams to Score. That streak was ended, however, with last week’s 1-0 loss to Austin FC.
  • Charlotte are yet to win away from home this term (D2 L6), scoring five times in eight away matches so far and doing so for the third away game running in last week’s 1-1 draw with the Columbus Crew.

Furthermore, the visitors are enjoying an uplifting period. The recent draw at Columbus Crew wasn’t without some good fortune but means they remain unbeaten under interim manager Christian Lattanzio, albeit his spell comprises only two matches: a 2-0 home win against New York RB and that result in Columbus. The confidence and belief garnered from those results should, however, produce at least one goal from the visitors. Meanwhile, Montreal almost always score on home soil.
