Preview: Saputo Stadium is the setting for MLS Week 23’s clash between Eastern Conference high-flyers CF Montreal (fourth in the standings) and New York City (second). It has been a fixture dominated by the latter through the years, but is that set to change in the early hours of Sunday morning?

Montreal – Dose of midweek motivation what this team needed?

This past week was all about Silverware in North America. We now know the finalists of this year’s US Open Cup, with Orlando City set to host Sacramento Republic in a match-up few would have predicted, while there was a strong MLS vibe to the 2022 Canadian Championship final as Vancouver Whitecaps pipped Toronto FC to the prize. CF Montreal, as the third Cascadian representative in MLS, could only watch from afar.

If seeing their Canadian rivals lock horns for a trophy hasn’t fuelled the flames of motivation for this team, then nothing will. CF Montreal return to competitive action then perhaps with something to prove – and improve – as they go about closing the gap on the three teams above them in the Eastern Conference. They have the form to do so, having won their last two encounters vs Toronto FC (1-0) and DC United (1-2).

Key Stat: CF Montreal have drawn two matches in MLS all year – only Charlotte FC and Seattle Sounders have drawn as few as that – and are currently 13 league games since their last drawn game (W8 L5 since 1-1 draw at Philadelphia Union in April).

CF Montreal Win By One Goal

New York City – Pigeons must learn to fly without star striker?

The post-Taty Castellanos era begins in earnest after the Argentine goalscoring supremo was sent on loan to Spain’s La Liga with Girona FC. He leaves behind a NYCFC team second in the Eastern Conference, only a point shy of leaders Philadelphia Union with a game in hand to boot. So the club is in a strong position to absorb the blow, but in the short term could losing the league’s most accomplished goal-getter hurt them?

I guess we’ll find out soon enough. Castellanos’ final act was to lay on his second assist of the season – complementing 13 goals, which is still a league leading total – in last week’s 2-0 home win over Inter Miami. That a fourth successive win, the last three of which ‘to nil’, in this six-strong unbeaten stretch for The Pigeons. Another on Sunday sees them win three straight on the road in MLS for the first time since 2019.

Key Stat: New York City are W4 D2 L3 away from home this MLS season. All four of their victories were achieved without conceding a goal, failing to win on all four occasions when giving up at least one goal on their travels (D1 L3 in these games).

CF Montreal Vs New York City Betting Advice

Having drawn just two of 21 games in MLS this season, and none of 10 so far when here at Saputo Stadium, we can probably swerve the draw in the Match Odds market. NYCFC have played to five draws thus far, however, only two came from nine away outings. Besides, there has only ever been three instances of the points being shared between the clubs in question, with this set to be match-up number 16.

CF Montreal Vs New York City – Key Facts:

  • Sunday’s fixture marks the 16 in MLS between the clubs. NYCFC lead the way with 10 victories to the two of CF Montreal, while there were three instances of a draw.
  • Three of their four previous MLS meetings saw Over 2.5 Goals and Both Teams to Score, which includes the most recent at Saputo Stadium. That being CF Montreal’s sole home win in this fixture, via a 2-1 scoreline in July 2021.
  • There have been six instances of a 2-1 scoreline in the nine CF Montreal MLS home matches in 2022. Moreover, two of NYCFC’s three away losses were by that same scoreline – one of them to Montreal’s Canadian rivals, Toronto FC.

Montreal are W6 L4 at home this season. All four losses, though, came via single goal margins and they will be incredibly difficult to beat for a NYCFC outfit adapting to life on the fly without the league’s leading scorer. Furthermore, The Pigeons are heavily reliant on clean sheets for their road wins and this in itself spells trouble. CF Montreal would score in eight of nine MLS home games this season, winning six.
