Preview: As the only MLS side yet to register a win on the road this calendar year, Bob Bradley’s Toronto FC may well sniff out an opportunity inside GEODIS Park Sunday in their encounter against a Nashville SC which has gone off the boil recently.

Nashville – Gone quiet in the Music City?

In each of their last three MLS matches, at home to Vancouver Whitecaps and away to FC Cincinnati and Portland Timbers, Nashville SC would strike early – inside the opening 20 minutes – only to be pegged back every time. All of these games would end 1-1, leaving the Music City outfit winless in four having won only once – a narrow-margin success here at GEODIS Park vs Seattle Sounders – in seven (D4 L2).

Now, what was at one time a team nestled near the top of the Western Conference standings is currently sixth (W8 D9 L7), a point above the play-off line. Goals have been the main issue. Gary Smith’s side are enjoying a nine-game scoring streak going back to a 0-0 scoreline vs San Jose Earthquakes in June, but have netted once in six straight games and no more than that in five of the last six as hosts (W1 D3 L2).

Key Stat: Eight of the past nine MLS games involving Nashville SC seen them score but also concede. Moreover, only four sides are seeing Both Teams To Score more often in MLS 2022 than Nashville SC (BTTS in 67% of matches).

Toronto – Still not clicking for Bradley’s blunt side?

Just the four teams – Chicago Fire, Columbus Crew, DC United and Sporting KC – are blanking more regularly than a Toronto FC (W6 D5 L12) which failed to score for the eighth occasion this season in last week’s scoreless stalemate at New England Revolution. As head coach Bob Bradley was left to ponder how a team that carved out goalscoring opportunities equating to 1.70 xG didn’t come away with three points.

That made it three outings in four without a goal scored. The anomaly in this sequence? A 4-0 shellacking of Charlotte FC. And that truly was an anomaly, because that result stands as their sole victory in seven MLS outings (W1 D2 L4). Next up is a visit to Nashville, who are enduring a rough patch of their own. Yet this is TFC, winless on the road all season long (D4 L7) having failed to score in each of the last four.

Key Stat: Every team in MLS has earned a minimum of one win away from home this season, apart from Toronto FC who are now winless for 19 consecutive MLS away matches (D6 L13) since defeating Chicago Fire, 2-1, in July 2021.

Nashville SC Vs Toronto FC Betting Advice

Confidence isn’t exactly flowing for either team right now. Consequently, there are a few angles into this contest. The first is opposing goals, either by backing Both Teams to Score NO or Under 2.5 Goals. I’m happy to swerve the former in the knowledge eight of Nashville SC’s nine previous matches saw both teams score. They are, however, struggling to score in bulk, netting no more than one goal for six straight games.

Nashville SC Vs Toronto FC – Key Facts:

  • Sixth in the Western Conference meets 13 in the East, as Nashville SC welcome Toronto FC to GEODIS Park. The head-to-head is level after four meetings so far, with Nashville SC going unbeaten in the first three (W1 D2) but Toronto winning the most recent.
  • That win for TFC was in Toronto though. Nashville did win the side’s sole meeting as the hosts, a 3-2 success in June 2021. However, Gary Smith’s men have struggled since moving to GEODIS Park earlier this season, putting up W3 D5 L2 through ten outings.
  • Toronto FC are still looking for their first away victory in MLS 2022 (D4 L7). Three of their last four games saw Under 2.5 Goals while only one of the last five for Nashville SC produced more than two goals.

Toronto, meanwhile, are coming off a dire six-game stretching in which they’ve scored four times, all in a 4-0 home win vs Charlotte FC. Four of their past six league games seen them blank. For me, though, I cannot get past the price of evens about the visitors departing with at least a point. Nashville don’t score enough, are still adapting to a new stadium, and face a TFC that will improve once all the new signings bed in.
