Netherlands Preview – Can Netherlands go one step better this time?
Netherlands were so close to winning the inaugural Nations League last time as they finished losing finalists in a 1-0 defeat to Portugal but nevertheless, it was a welcome improvement in performance and displays from the Dutch compared to previous international campaigns.
The Dutch came out on top in a very strong Group 1 as they edged out the likes of France and a disappointing German outfit to claim top spot thanks to wins against Germany and France at home in 3-0 and 2-0 victories respectively along with holding Germany to a 2-2 draw away from home.
They then beat England 3-1 in extra-time in the semi-finals before eventually losing to Portugal in the final, but that campaign certainly helped lift the Dutch side out of the doldrums and they continued their momentum into the European Championship qualifiers, finishing runners-up to Germany in Group C, and having won 11 of their last 13 matches at home in all competitions, Netherlands will be in confident mood here.
Poland Preview – Can Poland end Dutch reign?
Poland finished bottom of an equally strong Group 3 in the previous Nations League in a group which consisted of winners, Portugal, and the group runners-up, Italy, as Poland yet again failed to fulfil their promise on the international stage.
Draws with Italy and Portugal was as good as it got for The Poles who in between times, suffered defeats against Portugal and Italy, both at home, in 3-2 and 1-0 losses respectively, so perhaps Poland will be relieved to be hitting the road for this Nations League opener against Netherlands.
Poland did fare better in the European Championship qualifiers though as they finished top of Group G, winning eight of their 10 group matches and finishing six points ahead of runners-up, Austria, but in truth it was a fairly weak group and they’re expected to face stiff competition from Netherlands in this clash.
