Following recent back-to-back defeats on the road at Toronto 2-0 and Philadelphia Union 3-0, tonight’s hosts, New England Revolution, will be very happy indeed to return to their Gillette Stadium for Wednesday night’s clash with New York Red Bulls.
In fact, New England have lost their last three MLS matches as they had earlier suffered a 2-1 defeat at home to Chicago Fire prior to their consecutive losses away from home, but they do hold a pretty solid record on home turf with a record of 5-2-1 19/7.
Before the Chicago Fire loss, New England had posted three wins on the trot with victories recorded over Real Salt Lake 4-0, Columbus Crew 2-1 and Toronto 3-0. In addition, New England scored a 1-0 win in their last encounter at home to New York Red Bulls back in April of last year.
Visitors New York Red Bulls sit three league positions higher and three points ahead of their Eastern Conference rivals heading into tonight’s encounter, although they’ve posted some indifferent results of late which has prevented them from breaking into the Final Series play-off pack.
Despite wins over New England and Philadelphia Union, they’ve also suffered defeats to Montreal Impact and crosstown rivals New York City, so they’re by no means guaranteed of getting something at second from bottom New England this evening.
An away record of 2-0-6 6/15 suggests that this encounter could be a lot closer than a lot of people might think, and the hosts therefore stand a good chance of claiming at least a point here, given New York Red Bulls’ poor away form.
