New York City – Pigeons keen to reclaim top spot in East?

There is a feel good vibe in New York as both clubs, among others, slug it out for Eastern Conference supremacy. Until recently though it had seemed New York City were near unstoppable, recording a seventh MLS victory in an eight-game stretch when edging out Minnesota Utd on the road at the close of May. Reality has bitten since, however, and they are currently enduring their longest barren period of the season.

Wednesday’s wild 4-4 draw away at FC Cincinnati made it three without a win for Nick Cushing’s side, having also been frustrated by Colorado Rapids (1-1 at home) and Philadelphia Union (2-1 away loss). Their winning touch shouldn’t desert them for long, though. The Pigeons would drop points only twice in their seven most recent home league games, winning the last three head-to-heads here in the Big Apple.

Key Stat: New York City had scored exactly one goal in four successive MLS matches prior to Wednesday’s enthralling contest in Cincinnati, which ended in the points being evenly split after a 4-4 draw.

Atlanta Utd – Dismal away record unlikely to be improved upon?

It was the late, late show in midweek as Atlanta Utd’s miserable stretch of form was exacerbated in New York by a 2-1 defeat to the New York Red Bulls. Josef Martinez struck for the fourth time in league play in 2022 – no team-mate has more – with fifteen minutes remaining on the clock, but it still wasn’t enough for even a share of the spoils. The Five Stripes breached twice inside the closing eight minutes.

That marked a second straight 2-1 reverse for Gonzalo Pineda and his team, who have now gone down by the same scoreline three times across four MLS outings – a 2-0 home success against Inter Miami doing little to offset narrow-margin results to Columbus Crew, Toronto and now NYRB. They remain in New York for MLS Week 18, bidding to improve upon a dismal return of two wins in eleven league games (D3 L6).

Key Stat: Goals invariably flow when Atlanta Utd take to any pitch. Eight of their past nine MLS matches featured Over 2.5 Goals as well as Both Teams to Score, which includes all of their previous five on the road (D1 L4).

New York City Vs Atlanta Utd Betting Advice

Even when taking their mini blip into account, it is difficult to disagree with New York City being firm favourites to chalk up win number nine of this MLS season. For context, Atlanta Utd are lagging well behind, with only one of five wins so far being earned on their travels. The Five Stripes are currently winless across six said fixtures (D2 L4), giving up exactly two goals in each of the last five.

New York City Vs Atlanta Utd – Key Facts:

  • Atlanta Utd hasn’t enjoyed much success across four previous meetings with New York City (D1 L3). NYCFC won the last three staged in New York meanwhile, the last two being ‘to nil’.
  • Atlanta Utd haven’t won an MLS away game since beating DC United, who are ranked joint-last in the Eastern Conference, on April 2 (D2 L4 thereafter). Moreover, three of their past four league games, home and away, saw them defeated by a 2-1 scoreline.
  • New York City are in the midst of their worst spell of form in MLS this term (without a win in three, D1 L2). However, they are currently unbeaten as hosts for three months, winning five of seven subsequent MLS home games.

New York City are the selection then. Extracting value isn’t necessarily straightforward, though, as four of their five previous home victories were ‘to nil’. They’re also in the midst of a lull, conceding in four straight matches in all competitions, in which they won none of these games. Their record as hosts is imperious, however, recording wins in five of the last seven having won all of the past three H2Hs in New York.
