Preview: Having gone six away league games without a win, arguably the last thing Phil Neville needs right now is a trip to Yankee Stadium to take on a New York City side in blistering hot form and boasts a 100% winning record in games against Inter Miami.

New York City – Pigeons soaring to the Eastern summit?

If we are to believe what is being reported, we could be seeing Taty Castellanos one final time for New York City in the MLS this weekend. The Argentine, who maintained his outright lead in the MLS Golden Boot race with the decisive strike in last Sunday’s 1-0 derby win over New York Red Bulls, has made no secret of his desire to move to Europe and is close to sealing a switch to La Liga with newly-promoted Girona.

Could Castellanos’ last act be to score the goal(s) that sends NYCFC back atop the Eastern Conference? A win against Inter Miami, coupled with Philadelphia Union tripping up in Orlando, will ensure this happens. Nick Cushing’s side, on a three-game winning streak, should be confident of upholding their end of the bargain. Unbeaten at home since April (W6 D3), they boast a 100% record (4 wins) at home to Inter Miami.

Key Stat: Four of the previous five MLS victories for New York City FC came via the same scoreline: 1-0. Including last week’s satisfying Hudson River Derby success away to New York Red Bulls.

New York City 1-0 (Correct Score)

Inter Miami – Herons a lost cause when travelling?

Not for the first time this season, we were treated to the fighting qualities of this Phil Neville side during last weekend’s come-from-behind victory over Charlotte. Finding themselves 2-0 down at the break, Inter Miami refused to wilt when others – I am looking at the likes of Chicago Fire and Sporting KC – might have. Producing a stirring comeback with three unanswered strikes in the closing 30 minutes.

The win was important in itself, as it keeps them within striking distance (two points) of the MLS Playoff line in the East. So they won’t lack for motivation in New York, nor can they be discounted should they fall behind again. The Herons have trailed in each of their past five matches (W2 D1 L2) and only once, in their last-gasp defeat away to Orlando City, failed to respond, either through avoiding the loss or by scoring.

Key Stat: The recent 3-2 win over Charlotte FC made it one loss in eight MLS home games for Inter Miami. On the road, though, Phil Neville’s side are winless in six attempts (D2 L4). Their only goal in these games came in a 1-1 draw vs FC Dallas.

New York City Vs Inter Miami Betting Advice

The table doesn’t lie. And this, unfortunately, spells trouble for Phil Neville and Inter Miami. They head to New York on Sunday to take on probably the best team in the MLS Eastern Conference: NYCFC may sit second, behind Philadelphia Union, but top the table on points-per-game. And there is little of their current league position (10th of 14) of recent away results (no win and one goal scored in six) that augurs well.

New York City Vs Inter Miami – Key Facts:

  • The sides are meeting for the fifth time in MLS. New York City have won all four previous encounters, doing so by a combined score of 9-3.
  • Four of the last five New York City victories in MLS were by a single goal margin (all via 1-0 scorelines). Thre eof Inter Miami’s four most recent defeats were by a single goal (two via a 1-0 scoreline).
  • New York City are unbeaten at home for nine MLS games (W6 D3). Inter Miami haven’t registered an away win in league play since April, and only one for the year (W1 D2 L6).

However, this Inter Miami side are ultra competitive nowadays, and rarely know when they’re beaten. NYCFC meanwhile, as good as they are, have only won one of the last nine MLS matches by more than a single goal. Four of their previous five wins were 1-0. Moreover, three of Inter Miami’s previous 15 league games were settled by no more than one goal. Any success for the hosts, therefore, could be modest in margin.
