New York City – Pigeons yet to off the ground under Cushing?

Dominic Dwyer’s 86th-minute equaliser for Atlanta Utd in last Sunday’s 2-2 draw at Yankee Stadium prolonged Nick Cushing’s wait for his first win as New York City boss. The 37-year-old replaced Ronny Deila, now in charge of Belgian side Standard Liege, who had steered the club to first place in the East having won seven of his final eight MLS games in charge. They’re now three points off NYRB in third.

However, under Deila’s former assistant, NYCFC are in their longest barren spell of the campaign, picking up three points in four games (D3 L1). Last recording a defensive shutout in a 1-0 away win against Minnesota United at the end of May. Since then, the Pigeons have allowed four subsequent opponents nine goals between them – only one fewer than they conceded in their first 13 games to start to the 2022 MLS season.

Key Stat: There were only three instances across New York City’s first 13 matches to start this MLS season in which both teams scored. However, since forced into a change of manager in late May, NYCFC have scored and conceded in four successive fixtures.

New England Revolution – Steady and consistent thus far?

Despite the obvious disappointment of not protecting two separate leads in last weekend’s 2-2 home draw with an improving FC Cincinnati, who are now five unbeaten themselves, the Revs are still enjoying the longest ongoing unbeaten run in MLS. They are now ten without defeat, albeit more than half comprises draws (W4 D6), going back to April when they were beaten narrowly in Washington by DC United.

As such, odds of 6/5 about New England escaping with at least a point appear more than reasonable. Especially considering the recent strife of their hosts. Regardless of the result at Yankee Stadium – a venue the Revs retain a positive record across five prior visits in MLS (W3 D2) – we can safely assume the visitors will be a threat. That is because Bruce Arena’s men netted twice or more in six of eight away games.

Key Stat: New England Revolution had scored in each of their first eight MLS away games this season, before a 0-0 scoreline last time out on their travels against Vancouver Whitecaps.

New York City Vs New England Revolution Betting Advice

In what looks the standout fixture this weekend from the States, New York City (1st in the Eastern Conference; W8 D5 L4) tackle New England Revolution (5 in the same division; W6 D7 L5) aiming to become the first team to inflict a loss upon Bruce Arena’s durable side since April. That would also require NYCFC delivering a first win under interim coach Nick Cushing, who is now four winless since replacing Ronny Deila.

New York City Vs New England Revolution – Key Facts:

  • None of the past six league meetings in New York ended in a draw, with both teams trading three wins apiece. New York City prevailed in the latest, though, a 2-0 win in August 2021 in which both goals came from Taty Castellanos.
  • New York City are on their worst run of the season, failing to win any of the last four MLS matches, drawing three times. Conversely, New England Revolution are without a league defeat since April, but drew six of ten since a 3-2 loss at DC United.
  • Each of NYCFC’s last four MLS games featured both teams scoring. This was also the case in New England Rev’s first eight away games, before a 0-0 draw in their most recent road encounter.

This really is an intriguing match-up. As while New York City are going through a difficult spell, their underlying numbers are still imperious – deserving six more points from their past four fixtures. New England’s numbers aren’t quite as eye-catching but respectable nonetheless, and highlight a team that is rarely outdone on xG by a wide enough margin deserving of a loss. I’ll chance the draw then.
