New York Red Bulls – Struber’s men fresher and raring to go?

Recent bragging rights in the Big Apple belong exclusively to the Red Bulls. The sides have met four times since the start of 2021. NYRB losing none of these match-ups and recording their third consecutive head-to-head victory – each one achieved against the backdrop of a clean sheet – in some style, reserving a spot in the US Open Cup semi-finals with a comprehensive 3-0 beatdown of NYCFC in June.

Gerhard Struber’s side have also found some form of late. They’ll approach this fixture unbeaten in three MLS matches. Lewis Morgan’s penalty salvaging a 1-1 draw last time out against FC Cincinnati after back-to-back wins over Atlanta Utd (2-1) and Sporting KC (0-1). Furthermore, with no midweek fixture, Sunday’s hosts have the benefit of naming a full strength XI without any concerns regarding player fatigue.

Key Stat: After going their first six home matches to this season without a win (D4 L2), New York Red Bulls are coming off three consecutive MLS victories at Red Bull Arena.

Taty Castellanos To Score

New York City – Could recent schedule catch up with them?

The self-belief that had begun to ebb away following a four-game winless stretch has returned, in time for Sunday’s hotly-anticipated New York showdown. New York City haven’t won any of four previous meetings with their local rivals. They will, however, be able to approach this latest renewal in confident mood, backing up last weekend’s 4-2 home win over New England Revs with a slender victory at FC Dallas in midweek.

If recent results are cause for optimism, this short turnaround – especially when compared to NYRB’s, who didn’t have a midweek fixture – is not. Head coach Nick Cushing did, however, rotate his pack for Wednesday’s scrappy 1-0 win at Toyota Stadium, opting to leave the league’s leading scorer, 12-goal Taty Castellanos, at home, presumably with this clash in mind. NYCFC lie second in the East (W10 D5 L4).

Key Stat: New York City have found goals hard to come by on the road this year, netting no more than once in six of eight MLS away matches thus far.

New York Red Bulls Vs New York City Betting Advice

The timing of this New York derby is far from ideal from a New York City perspective. The Pigeons were last seen in action on Wednesday, digging deep on the road against FC Dallas to secure a 1-0 win that was possibly undeserved on the balance of play (xG from that contest: DAL 1.33 – 0.76 NYC). Conversely, the Red Bulls haven’t had a game since last Saturday, meaning a full week or preparation and recuperation.

New York Red Bulls Vs New York City – Key Facts:

  • Victory on Sunday at Red Bull Arena would hand New York Red Bulls their fourth straight New York derby win. New York City’s last such win, meanwhile, came in a 5-2 scoreline at Yankee Stadium in November 2020 (they are D1 L3 since).
  • None of the last three meetings between the teams saw both teams score, with NYRB prevailing to nil each time. Prior to this, though, five of their six previous head-to-head had produced both teams scoring.
  • Both sides approach Sunday’s contest in good form. New York RB are unbeaten in three and seeking a fourth consecutive home win. New York City have lost only one of their last 14 (W9 D3) in MLS, and are bidding to win for the third game in a row.

Adding to all this is New York Red Bulls recent form. They’re unbeaten in three (W2 D1) and on a three-match winning streak at Red Bull arena, a venue they eased to victory, 3-0, over opponents NYCFC only last month. As for underlying numbers, both rank highly on Infogol’s Expected Goals model, with very little separating them. Plumping for draws hasn’t served me well of late (disclaimer alert) but this selection has its merits.
