New York RB – Red Bulls losing early-season gusto?

The Red Bulls flew out of the starting gate in MLS 2022, opening with successive away victories over San Jose Earthquakes and Toronto, the team they meet in the early hours of Sunday morning (not local time, of course). Three wins in their next seven matches, all on the road, follwed as they quickly set about ascending the league’s eastern division. Since then, however, it has been tough going for Gerhard Struber’s men.

Last Saturday’s 2-0 scoreline in Charlotte represented a second loss by a margin of two goals in three, for a team which had succumbed to defeat on two occasions, both by way of a single goal, all season beforehand (12 games). It was also a fifth winless outing in six (D3 L2) and a seventh successive game not keeping a clean sheet. So there has been some regression, even if their underlying xG remains steadfastly good.

Key Stat: Only the Chicago Fire, who sit bottom of the Eastern Conference, of all MLS teams have posted as few as one home win this season – level with New York Red Bulls whose sole victory at Red Bull Arena came in their last such outing, 4-1 vs DC United.

Toronto – Time to support streaky Reds?

The Reds are a team that plays in spurts this season. Which is why it might be time we give them a serious look this weekend. After opening with one point in three games, Toronto would win three of the next four, drawing the other, before embarking on a run of five straight losses. All but one was slender in margin, though, implying they weren’t doing a whole lot wrong even if results weren’t reflecting that.

So they deserve immense credit for pushing through and persevering. They are back on another of those spurts, currently unbeaten in two after a couple of battling displays against DC United and Chicago Fire – coming from behind in both to pick up four points. Their form still reads miserably, with one win in their last seven (D1 L5). But they are at least back within four points of the Eastern Conference play-offs.

Key Stat: Toronto FC are among five sides without an away win in MLS in 2022, losing three of seven said matches so far including a nine-goal epic to Eastern Conference leaders New York City FC 5-4.

New York Red Bulls Vs Toronto FC Betting Advice

Could I trust a team at shorter than 1/2 odds with a record that reads W1 D3 L4 when hosting, after a truly dismal display in last week’s 2-0 loss in Charlotte? I’m not sure sure. Especially as said team are currently one for six across their last six MLS matches (D3 L2). That team, however, are the New York Red Bulls whose dominance in this fixture knows no bounds having won the past three meetings in New York.

New York Red Bulls Vs Toronto FC – Key Facts:

  • An emphatic 4-1 scoreline at BMO Field, Toronto ensured a third H2H win in four for New York Red Bulls in March. Stretching Toronto FC’s winless streak in this meeting to six (D2 L4).
  • Toronto FC last recorded an away victory against the Red Bulls in October 2017, losing all four subsequent meetings at Red Bull Arena. Three of those encounters produced exactly two match goals.
  • Both these teams are not without their quirks. Toronto FC may be without an away win this season (D3 L4), but New York Red Bulls would manage only one in seven attempts here at their Red Bull Arena (W1 D4 L2).

Another problem is opponents Toronto FC are friendless in the betting due to their barren away record, going their first seven road matches winless (D3 L4). Bob Bradley’s side are in form, though, picking up four points from recent games against DC United and Chicago Fire. The Canadians are also a combative bunch, beaten by two clear goals just twice all season. So, at the odds, I will chance the visitors with a head start.
