Preview: Although there is still more than half the season to go, it is quickly developing into now or never territory for Inter Miami following a barren five-game spell. Phil Neville takes his beleaguered troops to Red Bull Arena this weekend, where New York Red Bulls will be feeling quietly confident about a fifth win in six at home.

New York Red Bulls – Late Union slip up to inspire swift response?

The Red Bulls will have had the best part of nine days to mull over their frustrating 1-1 draw last time against Philadelphia Union. Having seized the initiative from the spot on the hour mark, in a sequence which also saw the Union reduced to ten men, Gerhard Struber’s side contrived to throw away said lead with five minutes remaining as their winning streak inside Red Bull Arena was stopped in its tracks.

Fortunately, the fixture list has been kind enough to provide them with a golden opportunity to hop straight back on the winning trail. Back at Red Bull Arena, where they boast a supreme record of four wins, one draw and just one loss, NYRB will be hotly tipped and well-supported to make light work of an Inter Miami outfit that has spent pretty much the entirety of this season toiling away with little reward.

Since losing their opening game of the season at home to Sporting Kansas – who have since gone on to challenge an imperious Seattle Sounders for supremacy in the Western Conference – New York Red Bulls have collected 13 of a possible 15 points on their own patch, giving up a paltry 0.4 goals per home game. Three of four home victories, meanwhile, saw them record a 2-0 scoreline (7/1 Betfair).

Inter Miami – Pressure increasing on underperforming management?

Phil Neville’s tenure with Inter Miami has been an unmitigated disaster thus far, culminating in their fifth consecutive MLS defeat away to CF Montreal on 3 July. They have not been seen since. That may not be a bad thing though. Some additional recuperation may be exactly what this beleaguered group needs ahead of a pivotal period in their season, starting with this weekend’s trip to Red Bull Arena.

This is the last game on the road for quite some time as well, which is all rather positive in the short term but extremely worrying looking further ahead. All but one of eight points were acquired away from their hub at Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Their two wins, over FC Cincinnati and Philadelphia Union, were both away. While their rate of goals scored and conceded also improve when out on their travels.

Even when taking all this into account, it is very difficult envisaging anything other than a sixth straight fruitless outing facing one of the hottest form sides at home in MLS. Conversely, The Herons are coming off three straight 1-0 away defeats to Chicago Fire, DC United and CF Montreal. On the plus side, former Stoke City and West Brom defenders Ryan Shawcross and Kieran Gibbs are now available for selection.

New York Red Bulls Vs Inter Miami Betting Advice

Desperate times often call for desperate times. Therefore we may see Phil Neville throwing caution to the wind in the Big Apple, where he could opt to hand Inter Miami debuts to former Feyenoord goalkeeper Nick Marsman as well as full-back Kieran Gibbs, who has ventured outside of English football for the first time in a career. Both face the daunting prospect of slotting into a team verging on six successive defeats.

New York Red Bulls Vs Inter Miami – Key Facts:

  • In their latest MLS outings, New York Red Bulls were denied late on in a 1-1 draw with Philadelphia Union as Inter Miami made it five straight losses at CF Montreal, losing 1-0.
  • New York Red Bulls are unbeaten at home in five, winning four. Three of their four MLS victories this season at Red Bull Arena all produced a 2-0 scoreline.
  • Inter Miami are faring much better on the road this season than at home. Seven of eight points, as well as their only two victories thus far, have been away from home.

A break of more than two weeks may have done the trick for Inter Miami therefor. That seems speculative at best though. They’re in dire straits, with each of their previous three away contests going the same manner: a 1-0 defeat. Considering New York Red Bulls have only conceded twice across their last five at home, winning three to nil, it wouldn’t be at all surprising were NYRB to chalk up another To Nil Win.
