Newcastle Jets – Robinson’s men finishing the campaign better than anyone?

It seems strange that a Newcastle Jets (8th – W8 D7 L10) team enjoying such rich vein of form will be conspicuously absent when the Final Series gets underway later this month. A hopeless first half of the season to blame, when only two wins were banked through the first fifteen games, for Newcastle Jets failing to make the cut. This despite recently producing a level of consistency that few others can genuinely rival.

Since February, around the time Carl Robinson was appointed manager, the Jets have registered six wins and only one defeat in eleven A-League outings (W6 D4 L1). Had this been replicated in the first half of the season, a comfortable placement inside the top six would have been a given. As it is, sixth place is unattainable. Four points from reach at the time of writing, with only Thursday’s encounter left on the agenda.

However, that their fate was sealed long ago hasn’t negatively impacted on their results. The exact opposite, in fact. Victory over Western Sydney last time out marked a fifth win in seven (D1 L1), even managing to claim the scalp of runaway leaders Sydney FC in the first of three matches following the resumption. A goalless draw soon after at bottom side Central Coast would therefore register as a genuine shock.

Wellington Phoenix – Complacency crept in with Final Series participation cemented?

An opportunity, the last before the season reaches a belated conclusion, to generate some momentum ahead of the upcoming Final Series. At one stage though, when the season was brought to a temporary halt in mid-March, the Phoenix (3rd – W12 D5 L8) were on course to finish as the best of the rest behind leaders Sydney FC, and thus secure a first round bye later in the month, after reeling off four straight wins.

It has been an entirely different story since the restart, however. The team has gradually fallen by the wayside, as far as the battle for the top two goes, following a dismal run of one win in five (W1 D2 L2). Their sole triumph coming against a similarly lacklustre Perth Glory on 22 July. Since which, low scoring stalemates with Adelaide Utd and Brisbane Roar (both 1-1 scorelines) have sandwiched a 1-0 loss to Western Sydney.

A spot in the Final Series assured. All that remains is whether Wellington can sneak into second before the regular season is completed. Thanks to Adelaide United, who came from two goals down to hold second-placed Melbourne City to a draw on Tuesday, the New Zealand-based club still harbour hopes of a runners-up finish. They must win this final match-up to have any chance, however.

Newcastle Jets Vs Wellington Phoenix Betting Advice

Only one of these teams has something at stake. That team being Wellington Phoenix. The Nix, in their bid to oust Melbourne City from second spot, require maximum points against Newcastle Jets to have any chance of doing so. However, it is the side with nothing to play for boasting easily the best form: The Jets winning two out of three since the restart, compared to Wellington’s one win in five.

Newcastle Jets Vs Wellington Phoenix – Key Facts

  • Brisbane Roar are the only team to have beaten Newcastle Jets in the latter’s last eleven A-League matches (W6 D4 L1), collecting seven of nine points since the restart (W2 D1).
  • In five post-restart matches, Wellington Phoenix have won once (W1 D2 L2) and scored no more than a single goal on four occasions.
  • Recent history favours Wellington Phoenix, however, who have won three and lost none of the pair’s previous four A-League encounters.

It would appear Wellington Phoenix are content with merely having qualified for the Final Series and, as such, taken their foot off the gas accordingly. However, their record versus Newcastle Jets stands up to scrutiny, with three wins and no defeat across the previous four head-to-head meetings. All four, meanwhile, featured both teams among the goals, as have four of Wellington’s five post-restart matches.
