Newcastle Preview – Can Steve Bruce lead Newcastle to their first semi-final since 2004/5?
The appointment of Steve Bruce last summer, to take over from the departing Rafa Benitez, was not an overly popular one amongst Newcastle supporters. In fact, it was derided and widely criticised. That makes the Toon Army’s current situation all that more impressive. Newcastle sit comfortably away from the relegation zone. Currently in 13th position, Newcastle are 12 points clear of the bottom three which – if you had offered to supporters before a ball was kicked – they would have bitten your hand off for.
To put it into some context, they are five points better off than they were under Benitez at this stage last season. And not only that, but Bruce has got Newcastle on their best cup run for well over a decade.
It may have been a somewhat favourable route to get to this stage but Newcastle teams of the past have come undone against lower league opposition. Replays have been required against both Rochdale and Oxford United but they have won through, and then survived a late comeback away to West Brom in the fifth round.
The visit of Man City definitely raises the stakes and is the hardest draw that Newcastle could have gotten in the draw due to Liverpool’s elimination. The fact they won’t have any fans in the stadium is also a negative for Bruce’s men.
Manchester City Preview – Are City set dust themselves down after midweek disappointment to reach another final?
Defeat away to Chelsea in midweek meant Manchester City’s two year spell as champions of England came to an end. Liverpool are more than deserving winners and Pep Guardiola will have no complaints – his team been second best. Instead, Guardiola and his players will look ahead to the remaining two competitions they are involved in. City are well placed heading into the second leg of their Champions League tie against Real Madrid when the competition resumes.
But, before that, it’s all focus on the FA Cup and attempting to retain the trophy they won in such impressive fashion last season.

City’s demolition of Watford in the 2019 final was them at their best. That’s a level we’ve not seen so often this campaign but they have had few problems getting past three lower-league opponents. Port Vale and Fulham both had four goals knocked past them at the Etihad but Sheffield Wednesday did prove stubborn opposition at Hillsborough, eventually losing 1-0.
You have to go all the way back to 2018 when Man City last lost an FA Cup tie and that was a massive shock in itself with Wigan causing the upset.
Newcastle vs Manchester City Betting Advice
Although Newcastle are very much underdogs going into this game, they have taken points from City in the last two meetings at St James’s. A 2-2 draw earlier this season was a few months after a famous 2-1 win for the Geordies in the 2018/19 season.
The lack of a crowd this time around is sure to be in the visitors favour, however.
