Nurnberg Preview – Can Nurnberg avoid relegation dramas?
After a lengthy domestic campaign in Germany’s second tier last season, it was ultimately an away goal in a 3-1 2nd leg defeat against 3 Liga side, Ingolstadt, which saved Nurnberg’s bacon as they won on the away-goal rule and thereby secured their Bundesliga 2 status for another season.
With the dramas of last season’s relegation battle now safely swept under the carpet, Nurnberg have made a promising start to this new German second tier campaign as they’ve earned a point in a 1-1 draw away at Jahn Regensburg before snapping up all three points in last weekend’s 1-0 home win against Sandhausen.
However, that win against Sandhausen ended a miserable run of six matches without a win at their Max-Morlock-Stadion which included four defeats and a 2-1 loss to Monday’s opponents, Darmstadt, and this is something that Nurnberg will need to address if they’re to avoid a repeat of last season’s issues.
Darmstadt Preview – Can Darmstadt claim first win?
Early indications suggest that Darmstadt are perhaps suffering from the hangover of narrowly missing out on a top three finish at the end of last season’s Bundesliga 2 campaign as they finished just three points behind the 3rd placed finishers, Heidenheim.
Darmstadt have picked up just one point from their opening two matches of this new German second tier season thanks to a 0-0 draw at home with Jahn Regensburg but not before they’d started the season on a disappointing note following an opening day 3-2 defeat away from home at Sandhausen.
Recent results have produced a mixed return for the visitors as they’ve managed to win just three of their last eight matches overall (two of which were at home), while three defeats out of their last four matches on the road suggests this won’t be an easy assignment at Nurnberg on Monday night.
