Oxford United Preview – Can Oxford take advantage?

After a three-month lay-off, Oxford United returned to action in League One straight into the play-offs and The U’s secured a solid 1-1 draw in the 1st leg of this semi-final tie against Portsmouth at Fratton Park which extended Oxford’s unbeaten run in the third tier to six matches.

Oxford United had headed into the lockdown in impressive form as they’d racked up five wins on the trot with wins against AFC Wimbledon, Ipswich Town, Accrington Stanley, Southend United and Shrewsbury Town, while ending the regular season with a home record of 11-3-3 33/13.

The U’s have also won their last three home matches on the trot but as we’ve seen in football in general following the return to action behind closed doors, results have been harder to predict; but Oxford’s strike pair up front of Taylor (13 goals) and Henry (12 goals) should at least see the hosts score here.

Our betting suggestion:

Portsmouth Preview – Can Portsmouth stay in tie?

A 1-1 draw in last week’s 1st leg of this semi-final play-off against Oxford United might have Portsmouth perhaps feeling they’ve missed the boat as they failed to take a lead from Fratton Park into this decider on Monday night, and having lost their last three away matches on the trot, the south coast visitors may be fearing the worst at the Kassam Stadium here.

Recent results have produced a mixed bag of returns for Pompey who have registered wins against MK Dons and Rochdale in recent times but have also fallen to defeats at Fleetwood Town and Peterborough United as well, while also drawing 2-2 and 1-1 with Fleetwood Town and last week’s stalemate against Oxford United.

As mentioned earlier, Portsmouth have lost their last three matches on the trot away from home but the likes of forwards Marquis (8 goals), Harrison (5 goals) and Pitman (2 goals) should give the visitors a decent chance of at least hitting the back of the net here as well.
