Preview: Three points are imperative for Panama in their quest for automatic qualification in this Octagonal phase of CONCACAF World Cup qualifying. They are red hot favourites to do just that against Honduras, who are coming off seven qualifying losses in a row prior to their visit to Panama City.

Panama – Nothing short of all three points will suffice?

Trailing the top three by four points with nine left to play for means Panama are very much still part of the automatic qualification equation. However, with arguably the toughest schedule remaining – they face the teams currently first and second, Canada and USA respectively, swiftly after welcoming bottom side Honduras – they are realistically in a two-way tussle with Costa Rica for fourth and a play-off berth.

Due to the nature of those upcoming contests, this is absolutely a must-win for Thomas Christiansen and his team. Fortunately their record on home soil holds up well, with draws against Costa Rica and Mexico preceding three straight victories – all by single-goal margins – over El Salvador, Jamaica and even the USA. They also boast the mental edge after defying a 2-0 deficit to win 3-2 when the sides met in November.

Key Stat: Each of Panama’s three previous qualifying victories saw them come from behind to do so, while they have only established a half-time lead once in five home qualifiers so far.

Honduras – Los Catrchos already thrown in the towel?

It has been a qualifying campaign to forget for Los Catrachos. Through eleven rounds they are still to register their first win, with draws away in Canada and El Salvador and another at home to Costa Rica all Los Catrachos have to show for their efforts. Should they fail earn maximum points from any of three remaining matches, they will have gone an entire Octagonal phase without winning for the first time since 1990.

Not even a change of manager has helped. In fact, things have taken a turn for the worse under former Panama boss Hernan Dario Gomez who, having inherited a team with three points from six qualifiers, has overseen six consecutive defeats by a galling 4-14 aggregate. And if anything signals surrender, then how about three back-to-back losses to nil to Canada, El Salvaor and USA during the last international window?

Key Stat: Honduras are enduring a seven-match losing sequence in World Cup qualifying, conceding at least twice in each said loss and losing by at least a margin of two goals in five.

Panama Vs Honduras Betting Advice

In what is patently their most forgiving of three remaining qualifiers, this is absolutely a must win encounter for Panama. Anything less would almost certainly rule them out of contention for automatic qualification whilst also doing harm to their hopes of attaining a play-off route to the finals. I expect the hosts to play with greater urgency therefore, against an opponent that appears already resigned to its fate.

Panama Vs Honduras – Key Facts:

  • Coming from 2-0 down to win 3-2 last November, Panama would claim their first victory against Honduras in five meetings (D1 L3 beforehand).
  • Panama are unbeaten across all five home qualifiers (W3 D2), reeling off three straight wins against USA, El Salvador and Jamaica – despite conceding the opening goal in two of those contests.
  • Honduras are rock bottom of the CONCACAF Octagonal standings, are the only nation yet to win (D3 L8), and are coming off seven successive losses by a combined score of 3-17.

For a team that thrives off adversity, Panama’s odds of victory are plenty short enough. Their three latest wins were all in spite of conceding the opening goal, while it is seven successive games without a clean sheet. The pair traded five goals in the reverse meeting, which Panama won, while Honduras shipped 2+ in losing each of their last seven qualifiers. Making a home win with at least two goals the selection.
