The A-League returns this weekend and Perth Glory will be hoping for a fast start as they host bottom club Central Coast Mariners.

Perth Glory Preview – Can Glory cement their place in the top six with a first win in five?

This will be Glory’s first game since the 14th of March and they know they have to hit the ground running in a bid to confirm their place in the end of season playoffs. Currently in fifth place, Perth are four points clear of seventh placed Adelaide with a game in hand. As they have five games of the regular season left to play, this represents a great opportunity for them to take a big step towards a top six finish.

Of course, Perth did reach the grand final last season only to lose on penalties in agonising fashion against Sydney FC. They will be a dangerous proposition should they reach the post season once again.

Perth were not in great form before the break and managed just two points from their last four games. Their most recent match was another goalless draw against Sydney who are once again the big favourites to win the whole thing. For Perth to challenge that they will have to return to form quickly.

Tony Popovic’s men endured a horrendous start to the campaign, particularly at home where they lost all three. They have recovered to win four of their next six and have four of their final five league games at home.

Central Coast Mariners Preview – Will the Mariners end their dismal run of 10 straight defeats?

Whilst most will delighted football back it remains to be seen if that applies to Central Coast Mariners. Currently bottom and seven points below their nearest rival, the Mariners are on a terrible run where they have lost their last 10 in the league. Their last victory was at home to Melbourne Victory in January – one of only four wins they have managed all season in the A-League.

Ironically, one of those four wins was against Glory when the teams met in Perth at the beginning of the campaign. They would love to repeat that and end this miserable spell of form.

It’s fairly easy to identify where Central Coast have struggled and that’s defensively. Their concession of 51 goals is the most in the league and a total of 22 goals scored is the lowest. They have failed to score in five of their last 10 defeats and conceded 29 goals in the process. They can only hope the break will have revived them somewhat.

The Mariners will end their season with games against Newcastle Jets, Western Sydney Wanderers and Melbourne Victory – the three teams directly above them in the table.

Perth Glory vs Central Coast Mariners Betting Advice

Central Coast may have gotten the better of Perth when the teams met here way back last October, but Glory put that result right in their most recent meeting as they demolished the Mariners 3-0 on New Year’s Eve. Glory know that the higher they finish then the better their chances of progression in the playoffs and although four points behind fourth placed Brisbane, they do have two games in hand over that rival.

For the visitors, it’s all about ending this run of 10 defeats and I suspect they would take a point from this game if it was offered to them now.

Key Facts – Perth Glory vs Central Coast Mariners Betting Tip

  • Glory took just two points from their last four matches between February and March
  • Central Coast Mariners look set to finish bottom having lost their last 10 league games
  • The Mariners won 2-1 on their last visit to Perth, with Glory winning the last meeting 3-0

Perth may not have been in the best of form before the break but they have improved the longer the season has gone, especially at home. Seven of Perth’s last eight home games have had at least three goals in them and it looks a solid selection for their first game back against a team who concede goals at will.
