Perhaps the pick of the Saturday night action in the South Korean top flight is this clash between sixth placed Pohang Steelers and third placed Suwon Bluewings as the top six teams in the division jostle for prime position in the forthcoming Championship Round.
Pohang Steelers will also be very aware that their slender one point cushion over Seoul who are breathing down their necks may not be enough by the end of this weekend’s matches, so I’m expecting the hosts to go on the front foot here this evening.
Steelers have won just once in their last five league matches overall, while at their Steelyard Stadium, they’ve suffered three defeats from their last four matches. On a positive note, the home side have scored in every home match to date, with leading goalscorer Dong-Hyun Yang notching 13 goals.
Visitors Suwon Bluewings sit in third spot but five points adrift of league leaders Jeonbuk Motors who are in action on Sunday. The visitors therefore have a chance of making up some groiund beforehand if they can manage a win against an inconsistent Pohang Steelers outfit.
Suwon are in pretty good shape ahead of this important encounter as they’ve picked up three wins from their last four overall with wins registered over Daegu, Jeju United and Incheon United, but they too have been a tad inconsistent on their travels in recent weeks.
Despite wins at Sangju Sangmu, Gwangju and Daegu, they’ve also fallen to defeats at Jeonbuk Motors and Ulsan Hyundai, and a trip to another top six side in the shape of Pohang Steelers may well test them to their limits and their away record of 6-2-2 21/12.
