Portsmouth Preview – Can Portsmouth clinch 1st leg lead?
Portsmouth headed into the lockdown in League One on the back of a disappointing 2-0 defeat away from home at Peterborough United which was followed by a 2-2 draw at home with fellow play-off rivals, Fleetwood Town, but Pompey have had time to re-group and hold home advantage of sorts in this play-off tie against Oxford United.
Results in the latter stages of the regular season in the third tier were a bit of a mixed bag for Portsmouth who had won five of their last nine matches overall, but they’d also been handed defeats by Coventry City, Fleetwood Town and Peterborough United.
However, it should be noted that all three of these defeats were dealt out to Portsmouth away from home and against teams sitting in the top seven of the third tier, while results at their Fratton Park fortress were extremely solid and contributed to an unbeaten record of 12-6-0 36/15 which included winning seven of their last eight matches at home.
Oxford United Preview – Can Oxford pull result out of hat?
Oxford United finished the curtailed League One regular season just one league position above Portsmouth but level on points with their Friday evening’s hosts, thanks to a late surge in form which brought The U’s five wins on the trot.
Victories over AFC Wimbledon, Ipswich Town, Accrington Stanley, Southend United and Shrewsbury Town helped secure Oxford United a play-off spot and they’ll hold home advantage at their Kassam Stadium for the 2nd leg of this play-off tie against Portsmouth.
But first, The U’s need to safely negotiate this trip down to the south coast and having suffered just one defeat out of their last five matches on their travels, Oxford will fancy their chances of keeping the scores level before next week’s 2nd leg at home – however, they’ve failed to beat Portsmouth in each of their last three visits to Fratton Park, drawing 1-1 and losing 4-1 and 3-0 respectively.
