Portugal and Luxembourg meet at the Estadio Algarve this Tuesday in a 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifier. Serbia lead the way in Group A after four wins and a draw from their opening six, with the Portuguese a point behind having played a game less. The pair clash in Lisbon in the final group fixture in mid-November. Before then, though, Portugal will be looking for comfortable wins over Republic of Ireland and Luxembourg. Portugal Preview – Easy victory for Santos’ side?

Portugal have had a solid qualifying campaign up until now. The Portuguese have picked up four wins and one draw from their opening five matches, scoring 11 goals along the way.

After opening up with a narrow 1-0 win over Azerbaijan in Turin, Portugal drew 2-2 with Serbia in a thriller in game two in Belgrade. Since then, they have picked up wins over Luxembourg, Ireland and Azerbaijan. This will be their first competitive game since beating the Azerbaijanis 3-0 in Baku on 7th September.

Fernando Santos’ men will be eyeing up an easy victory at the Estadio Algarve on Tuesday night. As you would expect, the Portuguese are the red-hot favourites, with the bookies offering 1/16 for a home win.

Luxembourg Preview – Can the Red Lions frustrate their hosts?

By their standards, Luxembourg have had a campaign to remember up until now. Azerbaijan and Republic of Ireland are already eliminated from the group, but the Red Lions can still mathematically qualify for Qatar.

They kicked off their qualifying campaign back in March with an unforgettable win over Ireland. Portuguese-born Gerson Rodrigues scored the only goal of the game five minutes from time. Luxembourg also beat Azerbaijan last month, with Rodrigues scoring the winner in that one, too. Their other three have ended in defeats.

Luxembourg will enjoy the occasion in Portugal on Tuesday, but they could be in for a long night if the home team are on song. At the time of writing, you can get the away victory at 22/1, while the draw is priced at 12/1.

Portugal vs Luxembourg Betting Advice

Luxembourg put up a brave fight when the pair met at the Stade Josy Barthel back in March. Rodrigues gave the Red Lions a shock lead after 30 minutes, though Portugal bounced back with a 3-1 win thanks to goals from Diogo Jota, Cristiano Ronaldo and Joao Palhinha.

Portugal have won 14 of the 16 previous matches between the two. Luxembourg’s one and only win came way back in 1961.

Key Facts – Portugal vs Luxembourg Betting Tip

  • Portugal have taken 13 points from a possible 15
  • Luxembourg are currently in third place on six points
  • The Portuguese won the reverse fixture 3-1

Luxembourg certainly played their part when the two met back in March, but Portugal’s qualities shone through in the end. We fancy the Navigators to secure another comfortable qualifying win here. Take a punt on the hosts to win both halves of this one at 8/11.

Liverpool man Diogo Jota has been in fine form during this campaign, scoring four goals so far. Only Fulham’s Aleksandar Mitrovic has more in Group A. Jota is available at 15/4 to score the opening goal of this one.
