Portugal Preview – Can Selecao hold onto top spot?

Portugal have produced an impressive sequence of results in Group 2 so far as the hosts have lost just one of their five games to date which came in the form of a narrow 1-0 loss away from home at Switzerland but they have also registered three wins and a draw which has helped lift Fernando Santos’ side to pole position in the group.

A 1-1 draw away from home at Spain saw Portugal open their Nations League campaign in solid fashion and paved the way for future success which came in the form of wins against Switzerland 4-0 at home, followed by home and away wins against Czech Republic, seeing them off in 2-0 and 4-0 victories respectively.

Overall form and results in the Nations League have been pretty consistent where Portugal have been concerned as the hosts have lost just twice in their previous 17 games in this competition, while on home soil, Portugal have lost just once in nine games and they have also collected a total of seven wins in the process as well.

Having also kept five clean sheets within this sequence at home, Portugal look to have a decent chance of getting something out of this upcoming encounter against Spain but it’s worth mentioning that Portugal have failed to beat their visitors in each of the previous five meetings between the two nations.

Fernando Santos will welcome back defender Cancelo from suspension and the Portuguese manager has no further injury worries ahead of this clash with Spain.

Spain Preview – Can La Roja snatch top spot with final day win?

Spain had also produced an encouraging and solid Nations League campaign, that was, until their last game in Group 2 against Switzerland which resulted in a 2-1 loss at home to Switzerland, as they too succumbed to the Swiss in recent times and that result has now put Spain’s ambitions of a place in the finals at risk.

Nevertheless, Spain started in positive fashion by picking up wins against Switzerland 1-0 away from home and a 2-0 home win against Czech Republic, along with picking up points in draws with Portugal and Czech Republic which has still maintained Spain’s push for top spot of the group.

Spain manager, Luis Enrique, knows that anything less than a win for his Spain side though will not be enough to send them through to the finals stage, so we can expect Spain to be on the front foot from the kick-off here, and having lost just two of their last nine games in this competition, the visitors also look to have a reasonable chance of success here.

Interestingly, the two defeats handed to Spain were both dealt to them on home soil, losing to France and Switzerland, but the visitors are unbeaten in their last four outings on the road at Nations League level, along with also being unbeaten in their previous five meetings against Portugal as well.

Luis Enrique is expected to hand a recall to defender Dani Carvajal for this upcoming clash against Portugal with Chelsea full-back, Cesar Azpilicueta, making way, but there are no other injury worries for the visitors to contend with.
