French Ligue 1
Pick: Marseille +1 (Asian Handicap)
Odds: 3/4

Preview: Perennial title winners PSG are giving the rest of the competition a few games in which to establish a lead this season, presumably before reeling them all in. Marseille, who are the first visitors to the Parc des Prince in 2020-21, will therefore be doing their utmost Sunday to delay the seemingly inevitable.

PSG Preview – Mbappe absence won’t hold Parisiens back?

Having had the best part of three weeks to grapple with the heartache of losing a Champions League final, the 2019-20 French Ligue 1 winners belatedly begun their title title defence away to newly promoted Lens on Thursday. A makeshift XI, shorn of most of the usual suspects including Neymar, Marquinhos, Angel Di Maria and Kylian Mbappe, were surprisingly beaten inside Stade Felix Bollaert-Delelis.

The midweek loss, a warranted outcome based on the discrepancy in performances between either sides (xG: LEN 1.3 – 0.37 PSG), snapped Les Parisiens’ 15-game unbeaten streak. It was also their first blank since losing 2-0 in Paris to Reims in September 2019, having previously scored four goals in four straight league games prior to the league being cut short ahead of schedule in February.

A swift recovery is now expected at Parc des Princes, where Thomas Tuchel’s free-flowing side dropped only five points all of last season (W12 D1 L1). However, the German may well have to make do once more with what limited personnel is available to him for Sunday’s visit of Marseille, who are a more established outfit than the Lens side which dealt with PSG’s second string with a minimal fuss.

Marseille Preview – Form and fitness working in their favour?

A week later than most and Marseille would eventually get their Ligue 1 campaign up and running, and in fine style too, overcoming a very spirited Stade Brest as Andre Villas-Boas men ran out 3-2 winners in Brittany. A clinical performance, benefiting from a set-piece brace from centre-back Duje Caleta-Car, and a fortunate set of three points after coming away having lost the xG battle (BRE 1.95 – 1.26 MAR).

Marseille have now won four consecutive Ligue 1 away games for the first time since October 2014, which is another fine example of the huge strides this team has undertaken since the arrival of their Portuguese coach. They’ve also lost only one league game in fifteen (W13 D2), since what looked like a damaging 4-0 scoreline away to PSG at the end of October. If anything it served to galvanise the collective.

With a competitive game under their belts, as well as a nine-game unbeaten run on the road (W7) having won each of the previous four whilst scoring at least twice in each, you sense L’OM are more prepared for what awaits them in Paris than as was the case last season. However, a lack of new additions might also hint at this team stagnating just when it appeared they were shaping to be the undisputed best of the rest in France.

PSG Vs Marseille Betting Advice

Pre-season preparations for PSG clearly haven’t gone as Thomas Tuchel would have expected, with the Champions League final eating into a period in which most teams around Europe were using as a means of recuperation and a chance to regroup. On top of this, a large chunk of the first-team currently finds itself in quarantine. To say Marseille are presented with an outstanding opportunity to land an early blow is an understatement.

PSG Vs Marseille – Key Facts

  • An unbeaten 15-game sequence, comprising 13 victories and 49 goals scored, is what PSG are trying to preserve ahead of their opening game of the season.
  • Marseille have lost one of their previous 18 Ligue 1 matches (W13 D4 L1) since a 4-0 loss in Paris to PSG in October 2019, winning the last four in a row away from home.
  • Just one (a 4-0 victory over Dijon) of PSG‘s last six home Ligue 1 games fell below Over 4.5 Goals, while Marseille‘s last two away fixtures both produced five goals.

Marseille are already up and running after escaping Brest with a victory they barely deserved before the recent break. That was a fourth successive away win in Ligue 1, which could soon become five, while they’ve now lost once in eighteen (W13 D4 L1). PSG are likely to be without several key figures for this, making them incredibly vulnerable to back-to-back losses for the first time since April 2019. Marseille 2-1.
