Preview: Following the humbling they endured last time out in Nantes, we could well have a PSG with something to prove at Parc des Princes. Saint-Etienne arrive resurgent, however, keen to become only the second Ligue 1 team this term to prevent the Parisians from earning maximum points in the French capital.

PSG – Parisians to produce a response of champions?
Mauricio Pochettino’s humbled team return to action for the first time since suffering just their second Ligue 1 loss of this season. The Parisiens were blown away inside 45 first-half minutes in Nantes, trailing 3-0 at the interval. Although PSG would briefly threaten a comeback, the writing was on the wall once Neymar produced one of the worst penalties in recent memory that would have reduced the arrears to 3-2.
The loss hasn’t changed anything at the top. Marseille, who were also beaten in the same round, remain thirteen points back in second. Perhaps it was a case of complacency creeping in. This has been much less of a factor at the Parc des Princes, though, where they are W11 D1 in Ligue 1 this term. Recording six wins to nil in Paris thus far, they have won each of the last four here without conceding.
Key Stat: PSG haven’t lost successive Ligue 1 games since losing their opening two fixtures of the 2020-21 season, when they were beaten 1-0 by both Lens and Marseille in September 2020 having been without a host of first-team members.
St-Etienne – Les Verts won’t be lacking for belief?
It wasn’t all that long ago I previewed Saint-Etienne’s midweek visit of Angers on the back of seven successive league defeats. At the time they were rooted to the foot of Ligue 1 and all hope of preserving their top-flight status appeared to be lost. However, Les Verts subsequently won 1-0 and have since gone unbeaten (W3 D1), denied a fourth straight victory last time out by European aspirants Strasbourg.
Pascal Dupraz deserve immense credit for turning around a sinking ship, and he can become the first Les Verts coach to oversee three consecutive away Ligue 1 victories since Claude Puel in November 2019. They are not out of the woods though. Failure to take anything from Paris could see them return to the Ligue 1 relegation zone, losing six of seven away league games against PSG since a 2-1 win in November 2012.
Key Stat: Saint-Etienne have managed to score two or more times in each of their past three Ligue 1 games, as many times as they had managed to do so across all 21 prior Ligue 1 games this season.

We witnessed a classic in last season’s corresponding fixture as five goals in the final twelve minutes plus stoppage time seen St Etienne twice take the lead, latterly in the 91st minute, only to end up losing 3-2. In that game, Les Verts produced as many goals at the Parc des Princes as they had managed in six prior visits in Ligue 1. So if they couldn’t beat the Parisiens then, they are unlikely to do so on Saturday.

- However, St-Etienne arrive on a four-game unbeaten run (W3 D1), scoring at least twice in each of the last three. Four of their six away losses, meanwhile, were by a two goal margin.
PSG might give the impression they are vulnerable following last week’s surprising loss to Nantes. In Paris, though, the runaway Ligue 1 leaders are W11 D1 for the season having given up a paltry six goals to the opposition. Add to this St-Etienne’s league-low 10 away goals and we have a recipe for a seventh PSG home win to nil of 2021-22. Les Verts are in decent scoring form though, so it isn’t a bet without risk.
