A desperate relegation battle is the League One serving for Wednesday night with bottom club, Rochdale, taking on MK Dons at the Crown Oil Arena with both teams looking for all three points to boost their chances of survival.
Rochdale, fresh from their FA Cup heroics on Sunday against Premier League, Tottenham, where they held the big boys to a 2-2 draw, will come into this encounter keen to replicate that effort and transfer their cup exploits in the league where they sit bottom and 11 points adrift of safety.
And although Dale have lost five of their last six league matches overall, there is cause for some optimism on home turf where they hold a reasonable looking record of 4-5-3 13/11, and have lost just once in their last six. That loss was to Blackpool, but recent wins over Bristol Rovers and Peterborough United show they’re not done yet.
Visitors, MK Dons, are in free-fall in League One and now find themselves third from bottom in the third tier having lost their last five league matches on the trot, and although they have a five point cushion over Rochdale, The Dons are still six points from safety.
Defeats to Northampton Town, Walsall, Portsmouth, Oldham Athletic and Charlton Athletic have plunged MK Dons deep into relegation trouble, and with a poor away record which stands at 3-2-11 14/26, they may find it tough going up north this evening.
To make matters worse, the Dons are without an away win from their last ten trips (which includes eight defeats), and confidence must be at an all-time low amongst the visitors’ camp.
It’s hard to pick a clear winner here, but I’ll side with the hosts and give the quarter-ball.
