Saint-Etienne Preview – Can the Saints make home advantage count?
Having finished in a lowly 17th place last season, Saint-Etinne will be hoping for a much better campaign this time around. Former Leicester City boss Claude Puel took over in October last year but, despite a promising start, failed to make a positive impact.
This is a big season for Les Verts, who are the record Ligue 1 champions. However, they have not won the championship since the 1980-81 season. Last term, Saint-Etienne fell to an embarrassing 14 defeats, with only Toulouse and Nimes losing more.
Saint-Etienne would love to get into Europe, but maybe a season of consolidation lies ahead. Puel is an experienced manager, though, and the Saints will be hoping to get off to a winning start on their own patch at the weekend.
Lorient Preview – Six points from a possible six for Pelissier’s troops?
Christopher Pelissier’s Lorient were the top dogs in Ligue 2 last season, picking up 17 wins from 28 league matches to finish champions of the second division. The season was cut short, of course, but Lorient’s 54 points proved to be enough.
Les Merlus were excellent on the road last term, racking up 26 away points. Only Ajaccio picked up more. Overall, Lorient won eight of 14 away fixtures, while they also had the second best home record in the division.

Lorient started life back in the top tier with a convincing home win over Strasbourg last weekend. Pelissier’s men were superb on home turf, coming from behind to secure an impressive 3-1 victory. Lorient were behind at the break, but second-half efforts from Yoane Wissa, Adrian Grbic and Pierre-Yves Hamel turned the game on its head in stunning style.
Can the club from Brittany make it six points from a possible six with victory at the Stade Geoffroy-Guichard on Sunday?
