Wednesday night also sees further action from the Brazilian Serie A and my next pick features high-flying third placed Santos taking on struggling Chapecoense at their Estádio Urbano Caldeira in Sao Paulo as the hosts look to extend their recent unbeaten run.
Santos head into this encounter having put together a four-match unbeaten run which includes wins over Sao Paulo and Atletico Mineiro as well as draws with Atletico GO and Vasco da Gama (both away from home).
Santos also hold a reasonable home record of 4-1-2 6/4 but they’ll be looking to improve these stats with tonight’s match against a Chapecoense side whose confidence may be a little fragile. A win for the hosts could see them close the gap on second placed Gremio.
As mentioned, Chapecoense have struggled a little in this season’s Brazilian Serie A as they occupy a bottom half position of 13th place, despite their recent 2-0 home win over Sao Paulo last time out,
That much needed win for Chape prevented them from falling deeper towards the relegation zone and also ended a six game streak without a win for the Santa Catarina outfit who are still coming to terms with their devastating loss at the end of last season.
An away record of 1-2-3 9/15 underlines the problems they’ve had so far this season, especially away from home, and they come into this clash having lost three of their last four on the road with defeats suffered at Ponte Preta, Flamengo and Sport Recife. They did, however, manage to take a point at mid-table Fluminense in a high scoring 3-3 draw.
