Serbia – Will Serbs bounce back after defeat at home to Norway on Thursday?

Serbia can look forward to their second consecutive World Cup appearance later this year following a dramatic qualifying campaign which ended with 2-1 win over Portugal – with a 90th minute goal securing the victory and guaranteeing themselves top spot ahead of that rival. Their group in Qatar will consist of Brazil, Cameroon and Switzerland, and it’s one they will feel they can be competitive in. Before that, Dragan Stojkovic’s men will be looking to get themselves back on track in the Nations League, ahead of starting their Euro 2024 qualifiers in September.

Defeat at home to Norway on Thursday was not the start they were looking for but this looks like a good opportunity to get their first points on the board ahead of a difficult looking trip to Sweden and then the away match against Slovenia.

(odds taken 2000 GMT, Friday 3 June)
Serbia – who missed out on Euro 2020 qualification after defeat in the playoff final – finished third in the last running of the Nations League which was an overall disappointing campaign. After Thursday’s defeat, it is now just one win in their last four home games in the competition and that will have to improve if they are to fight for promotion to League A.
One man who will be taking no part in these games is Juventus’ Dusan Vlahovic. He has been carrying a groin injury for a number of weeks and hasn’t been selected for this squad.

Slovenia Preview – Can Slovenia continue their good form on the road in this competition?

Like their opponents on Sunday, Slovenia also started their campaign with a defeat – losing 2-0 at home to Sweden. It is an early reminder of the quality of opponent they will be facing at this level, following promotion after the last competition. They went through that campaign unbeaten with four wins and two draws. This is the first of two away games before the return game at home to Serbia, with a trip to Oslo to face Norway in between.

Mataz Kek has been in charge for over three years and has two fourth place finishes for World Cup and European Championship qualification. So never really coming close to qualifying for a major tournament.

Slovenia come into this game unbeaten in their last four away games which will give them confidence they can get a result here. That includes draws on the road against Slovakia and Croatia which would be a similar sort of level to Serbia.

Fenerbahce’s Miha Zajc is a key player for his country having scored twice in his last five internationals. He comes into this game on the back of a productive individual season for his club, too, scoring nine in the domestic league.

Serbia vs Slovenia Betting Advice

It may just be the second game of the campaign for both teams but you already feel that Serbia or Slovenia need to win here to have any chance of finishing top. Sweden and Norway have plenty of quality and will be hard to peg back in this format.

You have to go back to 2011 for the last time these nations clashed. That was in qualification for Euro 2012 – a competition that neither team participated in.
