Shanghai SIPG Preview – Expecting no let-up from Group B pace-setters?

The 2018 Super League winners would fall short in defending their title the following season after finishing six points adrift of Guangzhou Evergrande in third place, but have undoubtedly made a bold early impression on the competition in 2020. Still under the managerial guidance of the former Olympiacos and FC Porto boss Vitor Pereira, Shanghai SIPG currently top Group B, three clear of Beihing Guoan.

Aside from drawing with Qingdao Huang (1-1 A) and Shijiazhuang (1-1 H), it has been a near-faultless performance thus far, collecting 17 of a possible 21 points (W5 D2). The Red Eagles netting at a superior rate (2.29 per game) than 14 of the 15 teams currently competing in either group, with Group A leaders Guangzhou Evergrande the only side to have found the back of opposing team’s net with greater frequency at this stage.

Victory in their latest two Super League outings, over second-place Beijing Guoan (1-2) and Chongqing Lifan (3-0), also means Shanghai SIPG stand on the cusp of recording three consecutive wins for the first time this season. Hugely influential of late has been former Chelsea midfielder Oscar, the Brazilian scoring in four his last five appearances to move level on four goals with Austrian team-mate Marko Arnautovic.

Tianjin Teda Preview – Only way is up for Group B’s bottom side?

Among a quartet of clubs who have never dropped out of China’s Super League since its inception in 2005. There is a genuine possibility that history, of the unwanted kind, will be made in 2020 unless Wang Bao Shan, the current managerial incumbent at Tianjin Teda FC, can somehow mastermind a revival in the second part of their Group B campaign. A group they occupy last place in after one point from seven games.

So, halfway through their allotted fixtures in Group B and the so-called Tianjin Tigers are still no closer to that elusive maiden win of the campaign. In truth, and as alarming as it is, they’ve rarely hinted at doing so, seldom getting their noses in front let alone shaping as though they might win a game of football. They’ve established a lead on just two occasions so far, against Shangahi SIPG and Wuhan Zail, and lost both times.

The biggest apparent stumbling block to an elusive maiden victory resides in the poor form of the attackers. In fact, no team has averaged fewer so far, netting at less than a goal per game (0.71). Their 2-1 loss last time out at Wuhan Zail marked not merely a fifth consecutive defeat, but a third game in the last four without a goal for Tianjin Teda, whose leading marksmen is indicative of their current malaise: a 33-year-old defender, Rong Hao, with 3 goals.

Shanghai SIPG Vs Tianjin Teda Betting Advice

At complete opposite ends of Group B, this chasm of difference between these two outfits should be laid bare on Monday. Shanghai SIPG have rarely put a foot wrong so far, claiming all but four of the 21 points available to them to sit three points clear at the summit, whereas Tianjin Teda have been found wanting, and badly, having registered a solitary point from their first seven match-ups.

Shanghai SIPG Vs Tianjin Teda – Key Facts

  • All five of Shanghai SIPG’s five Super League victories so far this season contained a minimum of three goals scored in the match.
  • A still winless Tianjin Teda (D1 L6) have conceded at least two goals in all seven encounters this season and are the lowest scorers, with 5 goals scored, in either group.
  • A 3-1 victory on Matchday One marked the fourth successive Super League victory over Tianjin Teda for Shanghai SIPG, maintaining the latter’s fifteen-game unbeaten record versus this opposition (W10 D5).

Tianjin Teda would assume an early lead when these teams met first time around, on Matchday 1. Shanghai SIPG powered their way back into the contest, scoring three unanswered goals to earn a 3-1 victory which is likely to be repeated, if not bettered, back at their Yuanshen Sports Center, where they are three for four (W3 D1) this season. However, the hosts have only kept the two clean sheets so far. Shanghai SIPG 3-1.
