The FA Cup third round replays will be played this week, and my first pick features Championship side, Sheffield Wednesday, taking on League Two outfit, Carlisle United, at Hillsborough with the home side looking for some good news.
Sheffield Wednesday earned a good point away from home in the recent Steel derby as they drew 0-0 with rivals Sheffield United at Bramall Lane, and they now return to home turf for Tuesday night’s FA Cup replay in reasonably confident mood after that result.
However, Wednesday are without a win from their last four matches in all competitions, but they did register a 3-0 win away at Nottingham Forest in the Championship on Boxing Day which was their last success.
Carlisle United have a difficult looking trip ahead of them when they face The Owls at Hillsborough, despite holding the Championship side to a 0-0 draw at Brunton Park ten days ago. Carlisle built upon that impressive result with a 1-0 home win over Crewe Alexandra when they returned to League Two action on Saturday, so they too will have reason to be confident.
Carlisle have beaten League One opposition in the first two rounds of this year’s FA Cup with wins over Oldham Athletic 3-2 and Gillingham 3-1, although both wins were secured on home turf to progress to this third round stage.
The Cumbrians’ away form of late though has been unconvincing as they’ve won at second from bottom Forest Green Rovers but have suffered defeats at Luton Town and Mansfield Town, and a result at Sheffield Wednesday could just be out of reach.
