Sheffield Wednesday Preview – Can The Owls extend unbeaten run to three games?

Sheffield Wednesday have produced a fairly promising start to this new League One season as Saturday’s hosts currently occupy a place in the early play-off pack in the third tier, sitting in 4th place and just four points adrift of the top two clubs, Ipswich Town and Portsmouth, prior to this upcoming encounter against Wycombe Wanderers.

The Owls have lost just two of their opening nine games of this new League One season with losses incurred against Peterborough United and Barnsley, but the hosts have also picked up important wins against MK Dons, Charlton Athletic, Bolton Wanderers, Forest Green Rovers and Morecambe which has lifted the Yorkshire club into early contention for at least a play-off spot.

Hillsborough has become something of a fortress as well for Sheffield Wednesday in recent times as Darren Moore’s side have suffered just the one defeat in their previous 14 games on home soil while the hosts have also picked up nine wins in the process as well, scoring 2 goals or more in nine of these 14 games too.

The bigger picture is equally as impressive as The Owls have lost just two of their last 25 home games in the third tier and this is the sort of form which Sheffield Wednesday need to maintain if they’re to finally lift themselves back into the Championship, and having been unbeaten in each of the previous four meetings at home against their visitors, Wednesday look in good shape to add to their points tally here.

Sheffield Wednesday manager, Darren Moore, is expected to name an unchanged side that held league leaders, Ipswich Town, to a 2-2 draw last time out in the league.

Wycombe Wanderers Preview – Can Chairboys move into top half?

Wycombe Wanderers were just 90 minutes away from an instant return to the Championship at the end of last season but a 2-0 loss in the play-off final to Sunderland not only broke their hearts but also consigned The Chairboys to another season in League One where they’ve made an indifferent start to this new campaign.

An opening day 3-0 home win over Burton Albion seemed to hold so much promise for Gareth Ainsworth’s side but Wycombe were unable to make the most of their opening win of the season as the visitors subsequently slumped to three defeats on the trot, which has left The Chairboys three points adrift of the early play-off pack, despite sitting in 16th place.

Losses to Bolton Wanderers, Shrewsbury Town and Exeter City were wake up calls for Wycombe who then clicked into gear by recording victories over Barnsley and Accrington Stanley along with picking up useful points in draws with Charlton Athletic and Fleetwood Town.

However, another loss followed in last week’s action in the English third tier as they suffered a 2-1 loss away from home at Derby County and having managed to register just one win out of their last seven outings on the road (which also includes five defeats), Wycombe Wanderers look to have their work cut out at Hillsborough this Saturday.

Wycombe gave a good account of themselves at Derby County, only losing in the last few minutes of the match so manager, Gareth Ainsworth, may stick to his starting eleven from last Saturday here as well.

Sheffield Wednesday v Wycombe Wanderers

Key Facts – Sheffield Wednesday v Wycombe Wanderers Tip

  • Sheffield Wednesday have lost just 2 of their last 25 home games in League One
  • Wycombe Wanderers have managed to register just 1 win out of their last 7 away outings
  • Sheffield Wednesday are unbeaten in each of the previous 4 meetings at home v Wycombe Wanderers

After narrowly missing out on promotion up to the Championship at the end of last season, it’s been a bit of a case of ‘after the Lord Mayor’s show’ for Wycombe Wanderers who have struggled to put any sort of run together so far this season, while hosts, Sheffield Wednesday, have made themselves a tough unit to beat on home soil and the hosts look the more likely to grab the three points in this tussle.
