Slovakia Preview – Can Slovakia avenge defeat?
These two teams last met in the first edition of the Nations League in League B Group 1 where Czech Republic came out on top, beating Friday’s hosts, Slovakia, both home and away to secure the runners-up spot behind the group winners, Ukraine – while leaving Slovakia bottom of the group with just three points to their name.
Slovakia went onto produce a reasonable campaign in the subsequent Euro qualifiers as they finished in 3rd place in Group E, being narrowly edged out for the second automatic qualification spot by Wales who finished a point above them.
The hosts achieved home and away victories over Hungary and Azerbaijan but lost home and away to Croatia, but although Slovakia have suffered just two defeats from their last 15 matches at home in all competitions, one of these was a 2-1 loss to tonight’s opponents, Czech Republic, which could be pertinent to this evening’s outcome.
Czech Republic Preview – Can Czech Republic record another win?
As mentioned earlier, although Czech Republic didn’t win their group in the first ever Nations League they’ll take a certain amount of satisfaction from not only finishing above their local rivals, Slovakia, but also the fact that they inflicted home and away wins over the Slovaks as well.
Unlike their Friday’s hosts who’ll have to face a semi-final play-off against Republic of Ireland in the Euro qualifiers, Czech Republic made it safely through the group stages as they finished runners-up to Group A winners, England, to qualify for next year’s European Championships.
Results away from home though need to improve as Czech Republic have lost seven of their last 15 away matches in all competitions, but they have held the upper hand over Slovakia in recent exchanges and they should at least avoid defeat here.
