Slovenia – Already in must-win territory?

Demotion back to League C appears the most likely scenario, that is unless Slovenia can turn their fortunes around across these final three group games after accruing one point through the first three (D1 L2). The first of those comes against Serbia, a side ranked 40 places higher in the latest FIFA rankings and who inflicted the heaviest defeat of the group so far on Matjaz Kek’s team – a 4-1 scoreline in Belgrade.

The gap between the teams was only too apparent first time round and bridging it won’t be straightforward. Slovenia meanwhile have now gone five without a win (D3 L2), winning one of the last eight. Defeating only Cyprus since October of last year. Certainly, we will need to see a significant improvement in their attacking play, what with three of their past four matches seeing them draw a blank in front of goal.

Key Stat: Slovenia were unbeaten at home for ten matches (W7 D3) between November 2019 and September 2021, prior to losing two of their last three said matches (W1).

Serbia – Mitrovic & Co. eyeing up top spot?

No Mitrovic, no problem. That was at least the case in Solna on Thursday as Serbia, who were missing the prolific Fulham forward through suspension but welcome him back for this visit to Ljubljana, ran out slender victors. Luka Jovic striking on the stroke of half-time with the only goal of the contest. Consigning Sweden to a rare home defeat whilst, and more importantly, moving within a point of Group B4 leaders Norway.

Dragon Stojkovic’s men will take top billing should they do the double over Slovenia, having already beaten the opposition convincingly back in Belgrade, and Norway slip up at home to Sweden. That will be the incentive for a Serbian team boasting seven victories in their last nine internationals (L2). Their recent record when travelling is even better, winning five of the past seven including big results in Portugal and Sweden.

Key Stat: All of Serbia’s last four away victories came via one-goal winning margins, with three of the scorelines in those games being 1-0.

Slovenia Vs Serbia Betting Advice

There certainly won’t be a shortage of motivation ahead of the teams rematch in Ljubljana. Slovenia (D1 L2 in Group B4), bottom of the group with a single point, must start winning matches soon if they are to avoid being left cut adrift of the other three teams. Meanwhile Serbia (W2 L1) will have their sights firmly set on promotion. The latter sealing a first H2H win in some style 15 days ago, a 4-1 triumph in Belgrade.

Slovenia Vs Serbia – Key Facts:

  • Serbia produced their first win in their third meeting with Slovenia, running out convincing 4-1 winners in Belgrade on 5 June, 2022.
  • Six points separate the teams in Group B4. Slovenia redeemed themselves with a 0-0 draw in Norway in midweek but are still rock-bottom of the section (D1 L2).
  • Serbia have beaten Slovenia and Sweden but lost to Norway so far. Their away record is excellent, however, recording five wins across their last seven away matches (D1 L1).

Generally speaking, Slovenia are a tougher proposition in their own backyard, losing just two of 13 previous home internationals (W8 D3). Both losses were recent, however, with Serbia out to inflict a third home loss in four on Matjaz Kek’s side. Moreover, five away wins in seven such outings, beating the likes of Sweden and Portugal, point to the visitors being deserved favourites for this. Particularly with Alexsandar Mitrovic back.
