Sporting Braga were unable to overcome a three-goal deficit against French club, Marseille, in the round of 32 in the Europa League during the week, and although Braga registered a 1-0 win in the return leg, they made an exit from the competition.
All focus now turns to the Primeira Liga for Monday night’s clash with Tondela, as the hosts attempt to wittle down a 10-point deficit behind second placed Benfica, and although this task looks beyond them, they’re in a good spot to at least make the Europa League again next season.
Braga hold a commanding 12 point lead over fifth placed Rio Ave ahead of tonight’s match, and having recorded back-to-back wins against Vitoria Setubal 3-1 and a crushing 5-0 win away at Vitoria Guimaraes in recent times, they’ll be confident of taking the points here.
Tondela sit in 12th place in the Portuguese top flight following four defeats from their last five matches with defeats to Porto, Estoril, Moreirense and Sporting CP, with their only respite during this difficult sequence, was a 2-0 win away at 14th placed Pacos de Ferreira.
However, Tondela’s results away from home have improved somewhat as they’ve picked up three wins from their last five on their travels with wins at Desportivo Aves, Vitoria Guimaraes and the aforementioned Pacos, amidst an overall record of 4-2-5 9/12.
It should be noted though, that two of these three recent wins were recorded against bottom half opposition, and a trip to Sporting Braga may well be out of reach for them in this one. In addition to failing to score in 5 of their 11 away matches so far, they’ve lost four of their last five meetings with Sporting Braga.
