Preview: Perched a lot higher up in the league table than their opponents, having won games and scored goals with greater consistency, it comes as no surprise to see Valerenga as favourites to win this contest with Stabaek. However, the latter are the hosts and are bidding to extend their unbeaten streak in this fixture to six matches – can they achieve that objective or will the gulf that separates the two sides in the table be in evidence?

Stabaek Preview – Hosts boast strong recent record in this fixture?

It has been a season to endure for Stabaek supporters thus far, with the team languishing down in 14th and currently occupying a relegation play-off position. Therefore the sight of a fixture which has brought them a healthy dollop of success in recent times (they’ve not been beaten by Valerenga at home in the league since 2014, winning four of the last five such encounters) should perk them up ever so slightly.

A big problem for Stabaek this season – and it is a notable one when glancing through the statistics – has been an inability to score goals, which is easily highlighted when looking at the Norwegian Eliteserien league table. No team has found the back of the net on fewer occasions in the current campaign than the club nicknamed De Blaa (The Blue Ones). However, the fact home games account for two-thirds of their overall goal tally (10/15) is at least encouraging.

Unfortunately, that is where the positives begin and end. That is because a recent 1-1 draw at home with Haugesund not only made it zero wins in their last four overall but also extended their run without registering a home win to five (D3 L2). Not since beating Bodo 2-0 back in April have their fans had something to celebrate at the Nadderud Stadion.

For those interested in trends, 75% of Stabaek’s home matches this season have produced Under 2.5 Goals. That particular bet remains generously priced at 21/20 with BetVictor. Although games involving them having gradually improved of late, with each of the last four producing both teams on the scoresheet.

Valerenga Preview – Deila’s men to continue providing entertainment?

Last season, Valerenga rather enjoyed playing Stabaek in the league, as a 1-0 victory at home was complemented by a hard-fought goalless draw in the away encounter to earn them a healthy return of four points from a possible six. However, the history book informs us that this has not been a happy hunting ground of theirs having failed to record a win in this fixture since 2014, succumbing to defeat on every visit since then bar that aforementioned draw last time around.

Plenty for Valerenga to find then, at least on the recent head-to-head form. That isn’t quite the case with regards to their form overall this season, with the team from Oslo enjoying a satisfactory campaign to date and currently sitting rather prominently in sixth position. They have been victorious on almost twice as many occasions as their opponents (7 v 4) and scored over double the amount of goals (31 v 15).

However, a recent 3-2 defeat away at Stromsgodset – which was a surprise considering their opponents were rooted to the bottom of the league – was a setback, and put an end to a previously promising four game unbeaten sequence (W2 D2). Their away record on the whole (W2 D2 L4, GF14 GA16) also highlights the drop-off in productivity when not having home comforts working to their advantage, winning three less games and conceding almost three times as frequently (16 v 6).

Another one for the trend fans. Each of Valerenga’s previous four away league games have produced a minimum of three goals, making a bet on Over 2.5 Goals more appealing at 31/40 with BetVictor. Meanwhile, 75% of their away fixtures have produced both teams scoring, which is 7/10 with Sportingbet.

Stabaek V Valerenga Key Facts:

  • Stabaek have gone their last five home matches without managing to win (D3 L2).
  • Each of Valerenga’s last four away fixtures have produced a minimum of three goals scored between the sides.
  • As the home side in this fixture, Stabaek are currently unbeaten in five games (W4 D1).

Betting Summary

The fixture itself is a positive for Stabaek, who are unbeaten in five league games (W4 D1) when hosting this particular opponent. This season has not been one to savour, so far anyway, while a recent draw with Haugesund made it no win in four altogether (D2 L2), and none in their past five as the home side (D3 L2) dating right back to April.

Not since 2014 have Valerenga made the journey to Stabaek and come away celebrating maximum points, losing on four of the previous five visits. However, they are the ones bringing the better form to this fixture; former Celtic manager Ronny Deila has overseen a side that has picked up enough points to occupy sixth in the table, a feat achieved whilst scoring a decent number of goals.

Many of Stabaeks home games have been low scoring. Recent performances, though, would suggest a team gradually improving, especially in front of goal where they have now scored eight times in the past five matches, with each of the last four producing goals for both sides. Considering Valerenga’s propensity for being involved in high-scoring affairs away from home, it makes a bet on goals inevitable.
