Alex Neil’s Sunderland and Neil Harris’ Gillingham clash at the Stadium of Light this Saturday in EFL League One action. Inconsistency has hindered the Black Cats’ promotion bid, but Neil’s boys have put together a good six-game unbeaten run at just the right time. Can they stretch it to seven with all three points on their own patch at the weekend? The Mackems are the odds-on favourites.

Sunderland Preview – Black Cats to extend unbeaten run to seven?

Alex Neil has started to turn Sunderland’s fortunes around, as the Black Cats have gone six games unbeaten since collecting just one point from a possible 15. Over the past six weeks or so, the Mackems have seen off Wigan Athletic, Fleetwood Town and Crewe Alexandra.

Sunderland have been desperately trying to get back to the EFL Championship since dropping into the third tier, but the Black Cats are in danger of missing out once again this term. At the time of writing, Sunderland sit seventh on 67 points, two points away from the final play-off spot.

Sunderland will be desperate to keep their run going with three points in front of their passionate home fans this Saturday. As you would expect, Neil’s side are the favourites, with the bookies offering just 1/2 for a home win.

Gillingham Preview – Can the improving Gills cause an upset?

Gillingham have moved away from the bottom three, with ex-Millwall and Cardiff City manager Neil Harris doing a fine job at Priestfield Stadium since taking over in late January. The Gills are in 19th place with 37 points to their name.

Since February, Gillingham have picked up five vital victories. After holding play-off chasers Sheffield Wednesday to a goalless draw, the Gills secured all three points at Accrington Stanley last weekend, with Charlie Kelman and Vadaine Oliver on target in a 2-1 win.

Gillingham have been much better on their travels of late, securing three wins from the past four. Harris’ side are more than capable of upsetting Sunderland at the Stadium of Light this Saturday, and the away win is nicely priced at 6/1.

Sunderland vs Gillingham Betting Advice

Sunderland nicked the points when these two went head-to-head at Priestfield Stadium in the reverse League One fixture back in October. David Lloyd opened the scoring for Gillingham from the penalty spot halfway through the first period. However, goals from Aiden O’Brien and Tom Flanagan turned the game on its head to give Sunderland a 2-1 win.

The Black Cats are undefeated in four against the Gills, winning two and drawing two. The Kent club have beaten Sunderland once in the league since 1987.

Key Facts – Sunderland vs Gillingham Betting Tip

  • Sunderland are unbeaten in six (three wins, three draws)
  • Gillingham have won three of their last four away games
  • The Black Cts are two points behind sixth in seventh

As Sunderland frantically push for a play-off place, no less than three points will suffice for the Mackems here. Gillingham have shown a big improvement of late, but we fancy the hosts to secure a routine home victory. Back Sunderland to win -1 at 11/8.

Ross Stewart is sitting pretty at the top of the League One goalscoring charts with 22 goals to his name. The Scot is priced at 12/5 to open the scoring on Saturday.
