Preview: After making winning starts to 2022-23 UEFA Nations League, Sweden host neighbouring Norway in Solna with early supremacy in League B Group 4 at stake. There is unlikely to be much to choose between them at Friends Arena, though, with their four previous encounters failing to produce a decisive winner.

Sweden – Back on the winning trail at last?

Those who kept faith with Sweden would have been rewarded with an odds-against winner on Thursday, as goals late into either halve sealed a 2-0 win away in Slovenia that has them atop League B Group 4 on goal difference at this early juncture. However slender an advantage it may be, it is one they will preserve should they extend their unbeaten home head-to-head record versus Norway to an eighth meeting (W5 D2).

Victory in Ljubjlana was important for morale if nothing else. Coach Janne Andersson had seen his team toil either side of 2022, going four successive fixtures – all of which had a significant bearing on them ultimately missing out on World Cup qualification – without a win (D1 L3). So often a different beast entirely as hosts, Sweden boast nine victories inside 90 minutes in their last ten home internationals.

Key Stat: The last time Sweden lost a home international was to Portugal, in September 2020, in a Nations League group game. Since then they’ve won nine – six ‘to nil’ – and drawn once in ten subsequent matches played on home soil.

Norway – Solbakken’s Lions becoming tough to beat?

Goal number 16 in just his 18th outing for the senior side for goalscoring extraordinaire Erling Haaland helped Norway to record their third straight victory of 2022 on Thursday. Having gotten the better of Armenia and Slovakia in March for the loss of no goals whilst netting 11, Stale Solbakken’s side produced a performance full of grit and concentration to keep World Cup bound Serbia at bay in Belgrade.

That is now three successive wins to nil for The Lions, with the Netherlands the only one among their six previous opponents to breach what has become an impregnable Norwegian backline. Even more impressive, though, has been their form over the last twelve months. Since a 1-0 friendly defeat to Greece on 6 June 2021, this upwardly mobile side has lost once in ten international matches (W6 D3).

Key Stat: Six of the last seven Norway matches featured fewer than three goals, with the anomaly their 9-0 thrashing of Armenia in March.

Sweden Vs Norway Betting Advice

The early pacesetters in the group renew acquaintances after duelling as recently as 2019 for a spot in Qatar. As it so happens, neither were successful – and both would have come to rue their failure to win either head-to-head. A thrilling 3-3 draw in Oslo preceding a slightly less exciting 1-1 stalemate in Solna. Though the latter would preserve the Swede’s lengthy unbeaten home H2H run (W5 D2).

Sweden vs Norway – Key Facts:

  • Each of the four previous meetings finished in a draw. More recently here in Solna, where Sweden responded to a half-time deficit to draw 1-1 in September 2019.
  • Sweden ended a run of four matches without scoring (excluding goals scored in extra-time) with a 2-0 win away to Slovenia on Thursday. All of their last seven matches saw at least one team fail to score.
  • Norway have sustained one loss across their last ten matches (W6 D3) following Thursday’s gritty 1-0 victory in Serbia. All of their last six matches saw no more than one team score.

When taking into account those recent meetings, it is somewhat surprised the price on the draw isn’t a few ticks shorter. After all, the previous four H2H’s all failed to produce a winner. Another bet which stands out is Both Teams to Score No. It would have returned a winner in Sweden’s last seven matches and all of Norway’s last six. Combine the two and you can find 7/1 odds about neither conceding in a 0-0 scoreline.
