Switzerland Preview – Nati usually deliver on home soil?

Vladimir Petkovic has called on those selected for the upcoming clashes with Spain and Ukraine to give 120 per cent, as Switzerland strive to remain at this level. The situation is perilous, though, amassing four points fewer than the other sides in the group. And if drawing with Germany twice was impressive, losing away to Spain (1-0) and Ukraine (2-1) has left them in the precarious position of needing six points from their final two matches.

However, all hope is far from lost, not when you have a formidable record at home to call upon. Switzerland are currently without defeat on their own patch in seventeen competitive matches, winning all but three, recording three consecutive wins to nil against Georgia, Gibraltar and the Republic of Ireland prior to September’s 1-1 draw with Germany in Basel on Matchday 2.

Spain Preview – La Roja keen to avoid 2018 repeat?

Top of the group approaching the final two matches. Spain have been here before of course, and won’t recall particularly fond memories either, missing out on the latter stages of this tournament back in 2018 when following up back-to-back victories with back-to-back defeats to finish second behind England. So they can afford to take nothing for granted, despite sitting a point clear in Group A4 (W2 D1 L1).

It could, and probably even should, have been better however. Having taken seven points from their first three encounters, drawing 1-1 in Germany before picking up successive wins at home over Switzerland (1-0) and Ukraine (4-0), Spain were undone in Kiev, losing 1-0 to an inexperienced Ukraine missing a host of key players. The latter result probably the biggest upset the tournament so far.

Switzerland Vs Spain Betting Advice

It is one win in six competitive meetings against Spain for Switzerland (W1 D1 L4), who were downed 1-0 in Madrid on Matchday 3. The hosts this time around, Switzerland must ideally win but can certainly not afford to lose in Basel otherwise their relegation fate will be sealed even prior to facing Ukraine in their final fixture. The good news, then, is that Spain are without a win in six away matches following Wednesday’s 1-1 draw in Holland (D5 L1).

Switzerland Vs Spain – Key Facts:

  • The Swiss are seventeen competitive home games unbeaten (W14 D3), holding Germany to a 1-1 draw in their only home fixture of the campaign thus far.
  • Spain have failed to register an away win in their last four competitive matches (D3 L1), falling to a 1-0 defeat in Ukraine and scraping a last-gasp draw in Germany in this group.
  • Just the one win from six previous head-to-head encounters for Switzerland (W1 D1 L4), losing the reverse fixture 1-0 in Madrid.

As well as suffering a shock loss in Ukraine last time out in the group, Spain were fortunate to escape Germany with a draw on Matchday One. Those away performances will be encouraging for Switzerland, as will their own performance in that thrilling 3-3 draw with Germany in Cologne last month. The Swiss, therefore, are evidently capable, if a little inconsistent. Moreover, they do boast an impressive seventeen game unbeaten record in competitive home games.
