Toronto FC – Forza TFC as playoffs edge nearer?

Since Lorenzo Insigne and Federico Bernardeschi marked their MLS debuts in the same game, a 4-0 pasting of Charlotte FC at BMO Field, in which the former laid on the fourth tally and the latter posted a goal and assist, Toronto FC have been imperious. They’re also unbeaten. Posting three wins – scoring three, four and four again against Charlotte, Nashville and Portland Timbers – and a scoreless draw at New England.

The pair have completely transformed the fortunes of a team which held stronger claims to be Wooden Spoon recipients than MLS Cup Playoff candidates. As per MLSsoccer.com, the Italian duo combined for eight of TFC’s ten goals since debuting on 24 July. Galvanising the collective whilst raising the standards out on the pitch, the pairing were on target Sunday as Toronto snapped the Timbers’ 10-game unbeaten streak.

Key Stat: Toronto FC have scored more in their past four MLS matches (W3 D1) as they had in their 13 league games prior (W2 D2 L9).

New England Revolution –  Revs out to shutdown free-scoring hosts?

Considering how disastrous a start to their Supporters Shield (awarded to the team that finished top of the combined league table at the end of each regular season) defence it was for New England England, to now be in contention for MLS Cup Playoffs is a small achievement in itself. Quietly though, the Revs are putting together a late surge which should ensure they stay above the line in the Eastern Conference.

Revs coach Brunce Arena oversaw a second straight win – the first time that has happened all season long – last time out, Carles Gil providing the solitary tally at home to DC United that complemented the 3-0 road win earned against Orlando City earlier this month. All in all, New England are unbeaten in four (W2 D2), and, going further back, are a more than healthy, if not overly spectacular, W6-D8-L2 since late April.

Key Stat: New England Revolution haven’t conceded a single goal across their current four-game undefeated run, registering one more clean sheet in this period than they had managed all season beforehand.

Toronto FC Vs New England Revolution Betting Advice

Any advantage playing at home brings has been lost on these teams. Across their last six MLS meetings, there hasn’t been a single win for the home team that day, with three of the last four all going the way of the guests. This includes the most recent duel at BMO Field: a 2-1 scoreline in favour of New England Revs in August 2021, on their way to capturing the Supporters Shield with a record-setting points total.

Toronto FC Vs New England Revolution – Key Facts:

  • None of the last six MLS matches between these teams featured a win for the home side that day. Meanwhile, only two of those encounters produced more than two goals.
  • Toronto FC are unbeaten in four (W3 D1), which is the same as New England (W2 D2) who are bidding to register a fifth consecutive defensive shutout. The Revs collected one of their four previous clean sheets against TFC, courtesy of a 0-0 scoreline in New England.
  • Both teams scored in all of New England Revs’ first seven away matches of this season, but this has only happened twice in their five subsequent road fixtures.

Toronto would be an easy lay then were it not for some inspired form. The Canadians have scored 11 in stringing together a four-game unbeaten run, winning the last twice at home against Charlotte and Portland Timbers. The latter unbeaten in 10 at the time. TFC’s only blip in this spell? A scoreless stalemate at New England, who are also unbeaten in four. I suspect both will be content with keeping their runs in tact.
