Preview: An eighth EFL Cup final seemingly beckons for Tottenham after they were handed a kind-looking last-four tie with Championship side Brentford. However, the team from the second tier have already eliminated four sides from the Premier League in their quest to reach a first major cup final and are out to cause a further stir at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Tottenham – Trophy Mourinho determined to reach Wembley?

Some felt Jose Mourinho’s appointment spoke of the club’s burning desire to win trophies, precisely what they are often derided for not doing by rival fans. With that in mind, it comes as no surprise that the Portuguese has elected to name a strong side in every round so far. This will likely mean a third game inside ten days for some of their big hitters, as Tottenham bid to reach a first major final for six years.

It helps, of course, to be dropped in at the Fourth Round, meaning Spurs will have played three fewer games than Brentford upon reaching the semi-final. After benefiting from Leyton Orient forfeiting their Third Round tie, the North Londoners would account for Chelsea on penalties, following a 1-1 draw here at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, before eventually easing into the last-four with a 3-1 victory away to Stoke.

Crucially, the confidence which appeared to have ebbed away before Christmas, when failing to record any victory across four consecutive matches, was restored over the weekend with their resounding victory in the league against Leeds. The 3-0 scoreline continuing a theme which has now seen them win seven of the last eight competitive games on home soil, with all but one accompanied by a clean sheet.

Brentford – In-form Bees seeking another top-flight scalp?

The Bees are going well in the Championship, showing enough promise to suggest they could conceivably go one better than last season when narrowly missing out on promotion to the Premier League with defeat to Fulham in the play-off final. Thomas Frank’s side occupy fourth in the table as things stand, sitting two points shy of automatic promotion after losing the joint-fewest amount of games thus far.

Brentford could therefore prove awkward customers for a Tottenham side who rightly begin as favourites but have lacked the ability to win games consistently lately. Not least because the second tier outfit boast form for upsetting teams from the top-flight, eliminating all of Fulham, Newcastle, Southampton and West Brom in reaching this stage of the tournament. Avoiding defeat at St Mary’s and The Hawthorns.

There are also other potentially decisive factors at play. The visitors should be the fresher of the two sides after seeing their weekend fixture with Bristol City called off, meaning five days recuperation since beating promotion rivals Bournemouth in the league on New Year’s Eve. That a fourth win on the spin, in turn stretching their unbeaten run in all competitions to sixteen matches (W9 D7).
