Just two points separated runners-up Wales from the 4th placed Hungarians in what could be termed a ‘group of death’ with the likes of Croatia, Wales and Slovakia also fighting it out for the top two positions, while poor Azerbaijan simply made up the numbers.
To their credit, Hungary picked up wins against Croatia and Wales at home along with home and away wins over Azerbaijan but three defeats from their last four matches of the group stage put paid to any hopes of grabbing the second place spot behind Croatia as Hungary’s challenge simply fell apart.
