Preview: With both these teams pulling off 3-0 victories last time out, we could be in for quite the spectacle at Stadion LKS, in Lodz, Poland. Ukraine are both the form side and the better ranked (27 v 47), producing a narrow victory when they met six days ago in the Irish capital.

Ukraine – Can they preserve sole 100% record in Group B1?

Disappointment stemming from their recent unsuccessful World Cup qualification bid, defeating Scotland in the play-off semi-finals but coming up agonisingly short in the final to Wales, doesn’t appear to have had the adverse impact some were expected. Quite the opposite, it seems to have galvanised a collective determined to do their nation proud in the midst of an ongoing war in their home country.

Oleksandr Petrakov’s team sit atop Group B1 with a 100% record after two games. Three points clear of opponents Ireland who have played a game more. Ukraine begun with a hard-fought win in Ireland, scoring the only goal through a set-play. Then, on Saturday, proved far too strong for Armenia. Both encounters saw them go in at the break level at 0-0, only to emerge with greater purpose in the second period.

Key Stat: After winning their opening two contests in Nations League Group B1, Ukraine have now taken their recent record to six wins in their past eight matches (D1 L1).

Ireland – Scotland victory alleviated so much pressure?

The curse of the Nations League is finally over. At the thirteenth time of asking, Ireland have their coveted first win in the competition – and it was achieved in quite spectacular style. A 3-0 rout of Scotland, who were unbelievably poor and contributed to their own downfall in Dublin. However, that shouldn’t detract from what was an outstanding team display from the Irish, who could have won by an even wider margin.

It will be interesting to see if The Boys in Green kick on from here after lifting a huge physiological weight off their shoulders. Stephen Kenny’s men were rampant; Michael Obafemi exceptional. Meanwhile, those goals were more than they had managed in all 12 previous UNL fixtures. Going some way to atoning for successive 1-0 defeats in Group B1, the first of those in Armenia before succumbing to Ukraine in Dublin.

Key Stat: Just one of the last nine Ireland matches saw both teams score – the anomaly in this sequence their 2-2 draw with Belgium in a friendly at Aviva Stadium in March.

Ukraine Vs Republic of Ireland Betting Advice

The confidence garnered from Saturday’s comprehensive 3-0 defeat of Scotland should stand the visitors in good stead. Ireland also stand to benefit from this game being played on neutral ground, in Lodz, Poland, as opposed to in Ukraine. Not that this prevented the Ukrainians from putting Armenia to the sword here three days ago, earning them their sixth win in their last eight internationals.

Ukraine Vs Republic of Ireland – Key Facts:

  • Their first meeting wouldn’t arrive until Matchday 1 of this year’s UEFA Nations League. Ukraine producing a slender 1-0 win, in what was an even contest in Dublin.
  • Ukraine sit atop Group B1 after winning their first two matches, both of which were to nil versus Armenia and Scotland. They’ve lost one of their last 14 internationals (W7 D6).
  • Ireland climb up to second with the win over Scotland. That followed to nil losses at the hands of Armenia and Ukraine, though they were unbeaten in eight (W4 D4) beforehand.

I’ve seen Ukraine a lot during this international period and been impressed each time, even in defeat to Wales. That remains their sole loss of not only 2022 (W5 D1 L1) but going back to September 2021 (W7 D6). Many of those encounters were close, though, needing a freakish strike to see off Ireland in Dublin six days ago. There was very little between the sides then and Ireland have only grown in stature since.
