USA – Three points matter more to Star and Stripes?

After an underwhelming start to this third and final stage for CONCACAF World Cup qualifying, in which they drew their opening two contests, USA have recovered well to claim nine of the next twelve points. A 1-0 scoreline in Panama remains their only loss so far through six rounds (W3 D2 L1). Here in the States, meanwhile, a record of two wins and a draw has preserved their long unbeaten home record (15 games).

Now up into second, three behind frontrunners Mexico but, and most importantly, three ahead of fourth place Panama and the play-off berth, USA know automatic qualification is theirs to lose. Aside from their 4-1 romp in Honduras, though, the Stars and Stripes haven’t been blowing many teams away. In fact, four of six qualifiers went Under 2.5 Goals, including home ties with Canada (1-1) and Jamaica (2-0).

Key Stat: An average of 2.1 goals have been scored across the United States’ six World Cup qualifiers so far. However, Gregg Berhalter’s side have only recorded the two clean sheets.

Mexico – El Tri out to consolidate top spot?

Although they were beaten in their most recent international fixture, a 3-2 reverse in Charlotte, USA, to South America’s Ecuador, Mexico are one of only two teams – the other being Canada – yet to taste defeat in CONCACAF’s final World Cup qualifying phase. Six qualifying outings so far have seen a return of 14 points from 21 (W4 D2). That enough for them to top the section, three clear of USA in second.

Victory in Cincinnati would therefore open up a huge six point gap on their biggest regional adversary, which would surely be insurmountable bearing in mind the sheer consistency of this Mexico side. As already highlighted, Gerard Martino’s men are unbeaten as we approach the midway point, whilst also leading the way in defence (3) and attack (10) having found the back of the opposing team’s net in all three away outings.

Key Stat: Including the summer’s Gold Cup tournament that was played in the USA, Mexico haven’t been defeated inside 90 minutes in any of their previous eight away matches (W5 D3), since sustaining a 1-0 friendly loss in Wales in their opening contest of 2021.

USA Vs Mexico Betting Advice

The form of the sides during this final qualifying phase has been such that USA begin as marginal underdogs. This is despite going unbeaten on home turf in more than two years, winning 11 of 15 subsequent matches in the States since sustaining a 3-0 loss to Mexico in a friendly in September 2019. Since then, however, USA have prevailed both times the sides have clased, albeit extra-time was needed on each occasion.

USA Vs Mexico – Key Facts:

  • This will mark the third meeting of 2021 between USA and Mexico. Those prior encounters ended in a draw after 90 minutes, USA ultimately prevailing in extra-time on both occasions.
  • Those draws means four of the past eight meetings have ended in stalemate, while four of the last six failed to produce more than two goals in the match.
  • However, there could be goals in Cincinnati on Saturday. USA scored in all three home qualifiers but conceded in two, while Mexico have netted in all six qualifiers thus far.

Another tightly-fought contest seems inevitable then. Not only are they yet to lose a respective home/away qualifier, with both boasting identical records: W2 D1, the pair are conceding at well under a goal a game (USA 0.66, Mexico 0.5). Furthermore, all but that aforementioned friendly of the last eight meetings has either finished level after 90 minutes (four times) or produced a narrow victor.
