Varberg Preview – Can Varberg maintain their strong home start to the campaign and make it six unbeaten?
It’s been an incredible rise for Varberg in the past few years, who were playing in the fourth tier of Swedish football as recently as 2010. In the decade since they have won three promotions with the latest of those coming last year following a second placed finish. This is the first season they’re playing in the Allsvenskan and they certainly don’t look out of place after their first 12 games.
Currently in seventh place, Varberg can go to within a point of their opponents with a win here which is an indication of how well they have done so far.
Key to their success so far has been how competitive Varberg have been at home. Following a loss to IFK Goteborg in their first home game, they have went five matches unbeaten, winning three of those. Their most recent two home matches have been draws and they would be happy enough if their recent unbeaten run continues beyond this game.
Astrit Seljmani has been key to their performances so far with four goals in seven appearances. He’s also notched two goals in the last three home matches having scored 15 goals in their promotion campaign last year.

Back to back victories against AIK and Hacken have put Djurgarden back into the top four and in the conversation for the European places. However, having won the title last year the focus will most certainly be putting pressure on the leaders. They are currently one point off third place which equates to European qualification and a further four behind Norrkoping and Malmo who are joint top. Considering how close and wide-open the title race was last year it’s unthinkable to see something similar this time around.
Djurgarden will have to look to improve their away form if they are to make ground on the top two, starting with this difficult encounter.

It’s been something of a mixed bag on their travels with three wins and three defeats so far. Interestingly, all three defeats have been when they have failed to score and that sort of inconsistency will ultimately lead them to falling further behind in their battle to retain their title.
They have to be more threatening in attack on the road and that’s shown up by the fact they have the joint-second lowest number of goals scored in the league with only five goals. On a more positive note, their concession of six away goals is the second best in the division.
