Welling United host former League Two side Tranmere Rovers at their Park View ground as they look to avoid a fourth consecutive defeat in the National League.
Welling have slumped to three defeats on the trot with losses to Wrexham, Braintree Town and Woking as they’ve scored just one goal but conceded five in reply which has left the Kent outfit third from bottom in the non-league top flight.
Welling’s early home form has been inconsistent already as they’ve beaten Guiseley 1-0, drawn with Eastleigh 2-2 but lost last time out on home soil to Braintree Town. Despite home advantage, they face a tough task of getting something out of this afternoon’s clash.
Visitors Tranmere Rovers currently sit in ninth place in the National League following their disappointing relegation from League Two at the end of last season which quite frankly was a disaster.
They’ll now attempt to bounce straight back to the football league this term, but as we all know, this is one of the hardest divisions to achieve promotion from unless you finish at the top of the table come May.
Rovers have a similar away record as today’s hosts as they’ve registered a 4-1 win at Gateshead in their opening away match of the season, but have since drawn at Braintree Town and lost at Altrincham.
That said, these are the sort of matches that Tranmere must win if they’re to be taken seriously as play-off candidates in this division. I’ll back Tranmere for the straight win here, but it might take a single goal to settle it, perhaps 1-0.
