Wigan Preview – Can Wigan respond after disappointment in midweek?

Defeat away to Sheffield Wednesday in midweek was Wigan’s for list in the league since the end of October. It was a 2-1 defeat at home to Lincoln City on that occasion but they put together a run of 12 matches without a loss, a run which included eight wins. That seen them rise up the table and give themselves a chance of automatic promotion. A top two finish is still very much in their hands as they sit second courtesy of goal difference over MK Dons, but they do have four games in hand over the three teams directly below them.

Wigan are nine points adrift of leaders Rotherham but have played three games fewer than that rival so will also have sights on potentially overtaking them.

Wigan win/BTTS
3/1
(odds taken 2000 GMT, Saturday 5 February)

No team currently in the top 14 have won fewer home games than Wigan at this stage. Their record of seven wins is obviously impacted by playing less matches overall but they would have liked to win a bigger proportion. Their away record is the best in the league and has been able to compensate for this to some extent.

You have to go all the way down to Lincoln in 17th spot to find a team who has scored less home goals, too. Striker Will Keane is the club’s top scorer with 14 and is in excellent form at the moment with eight in his last 10 league games.

Charlton Athletic Preview – Will Charlton put their poor away form behind them?

After a terrible start to the season Charlton’s main goal was simply surviving in League One. The job that Johnnie Jackson has done since taking over in October, however, has got fans wondering just what would have been possible had he been in charge from the beginning.

Despite defeat away to promotion-chasing Bolton in the week, Charlton look to have already secured their League One status for another season with a 10 point lead over fourth bottom Morecambe. Unfortunately, a possible tilt at the playoff spots look to be beyond them now. The Addicks are 14 points off sixth spot.

As they are in the relative comfort of mid-table it is all about a strong showing between now and the end of the season with a view to a more productive campaign next time around. The loss at Bolton ended a run of three consecutive wins in the league which was the first time they had managed that since November 2020.

Their form away from home is the key reason as to why they’re not closer to the playoffs. The win over Portsmouth at the end of January is their only away win in the last seven attempts.

Wigan vs Charlton Athletic Betting Advice

Wigan know that although they have games in hand, they have to ensure they get back to winning ways as quickly as possible following defeat last time out to ensure they remain in charge of their automatic promotion fate. Charlton are a dangerous team, though, and are more than capable of getting a result here. They also have the advantage of playing without much pressure.

Wigan were too good for their opponents in the first meeting of the season, but will be aware they are facing an improved team.

Key Facts –  Wigan vs Charlton Athletic Betting Tip

  • Wigan have managed just two clean sheets in their last 10 home games
  • Charlton have won only one of their last seven away games in League One
  • The first meeting between the two this season when the way of Wigan (2-0 at the Valley)

It is Charlton’s away from which makes Wigan a good bet on this occasion. The Addicks struggle on the road and I’m taking them to come undone once again on their travels.
