Bayern Munich faced Arsenal in midweek and suffered a 2-1 defeat. They were nowhere near at full strength obviously, but they did have a few of their big players out in the starting eleven. The likes of Thomas Muller, Jerome Boateng and Thiago Alcantara with Robert Lewandowski coming on in the second half of the game. Bayern conceded two minutes from time to lose the match in Carson, Los Angeles. But that is a good 90-minute work out under their belt. During the summer so far, boss Niko Kovac, who took a little time to settle in last season, has been bolstering the defence. He has brought in top young defenders Lucas Hernandez and Benjamin Pavard for a combined €115m. Hernandez was €80 of that total.

Real Madrid haven’t been shy with the cheque book in the summer. They knew, after such a poor season last term, that they needed to rebuild. Their attack has had a whole big upgrade with Eden Hazard arriving from Chelsea and Luka Jovic coming in from Eintracht Frankfurt. They haven’t stopped there with their squad makeover though as other arrivals include Eddie Miltiatao, Ferland Mendy and Rodrygo. That’s roughly €300 million spent. So already boss Zinidane Zidane has a lot more to work with. They may not stop their spending there either. But the arrivals heaps pressure on them to get back to their usual high standards, and quickly. After the money spent, there’s going to be no hiding place. Following this game Real will move on to play Arsenal and Atletico in the ICC.

Real Madrid: Hopefully at some point in the Champions League next season these two will meet competitively. There is bound to be a lot of changes and tactical tinkering with neither showing their strongest hands. But as Bayern lost against Arsenal, we’ll lean towards Real Madrid getting the win.
