It is three points that China have so far in this campaign which leaves them in the hunt for a qualification spot. They lost their opening game 1-0 against Germany, and then they took a win over South Africa by the same scoreline. The thing about this one is that they will have seen how strong of a side that Spain look. So China may think that it is going to be better to try and shut up shop and get a point out of this game. That would likely see them qualify as one of the best third-placed teams. The Chinese not a high-scoring side so it is going to be hard to see them come out and fully attack the Spaniards. If this game is open, China’s chances of winning are going to seriously decrease.

 

China were on a five-match losing streak (including a penalty shootout loss again the Netherlands at the Algarve Cup) before taking their 1-0 win over South Africa. Each of the defeats in that sequence were against  a strong European team. That’s exactly what they are facing in this final group stage match. Across their last nine World Cup games China are W4 D1 L4. Seven of those nine have all been 1-0 score lines as well, China winning three of those (against the Netherlands, Cameroon and South Africa). China did make it past the group stage four years ago. They reached the quarter-finals where they were stopped by Germany. That was a 1-0 defeat, yes. So China may well keep this tight against Spain, as they may lack the winning touch to actually push for a top-two finish.

 

 

Spain Women News and Form

One of the performances of the tournament so far was from Spain in their second group stage game against Germany. The Spaniards got so much of the ball and they continuously kept the Germans moving backwards. However, Spain still lost that game 1-0. They just couldn’t find a way through and the Germans hit them with a smash and grab job. So that loss doesn’t affect their chances of qualifying too much because they should win this game. That will add to the points they took from their opening victory over South Africa. Spain have the goal difference advantage over China, so only needed to draw to get a top two finish.

The Spaniards have looked a positive side though so it is likely that they will push on and claim victory. Spain were on a four-match undefeated streak of form before the defeat against Germany (W2 D2). The more that they can get their star player Jennifer Hermoso on the ball in this one the better off they are going to be. She is so highly influential for them. Spain do not actually have a good record at the World Cup finals themselves. They are just W1 D1 L3 in their last five World Cup games. But they can end this group on a very positive note

Spain to win: This should be all about Spain. There just isn’t enough in China’s arsenal to really get under the skin of the Spaniards. Spain are really comfortable on the ball and can find a way to win this. China may be happy with a draw as that will probably get them to the next round. But Spain to win to nil.
