This is the first time that the French have been in the Finals since 2006. In their last appearance at the U21 Finals, the French suffered a defeat against the Netherlands at the semi-final stage. This just their third appearance in the finals (in either an 8 or 12 team format), their other appearance seeing them finish as runners up in 2002. France won their opening nine games of their qualification campaign, failing to round out at 100% after a 1-1 home draw against Slovenia in their final game.

France collected 28 points in their qualification campaign, which was more than what any other qualified team managed. Their draw against Slovenia snapped an 11 match winning streak that the French were on in competitive U21 games. In their last 18 competitive games, France are now undefeated, with a win in fifteen of those. From their two appearances in 2002 and 2006 U21 Championships, France have won all six group stage games at the Finals.
